I was accepted to The Ohio State University in the early rounds right before Thanksgiving, however I have not heard anything about the Scholars program or merit based aid. I applied saying Scholars was my first choice (basically because I know that honors is a long shot for me) but now I’m not sure if I want to do it. I’m undecided and I don’t want to waste my time in a program if I decide later that I am not interested in the subject matter. For example, a couple of weeks ago I found the prospect of going into public relations very interesting, however now I’m toiling with the idea of majoring in psychology and going to med school for psychiatry. As you can see, I only have a slim idea of what I am interested in. So basically I’d rather focus on finding what I want to major in rather than spending all of my time in a scholars program for which I have no interest. If I do get in, will I be able to politely decline acceptance? OSU is still my top choice and I don’t want to hurt my chances of getting scholarships such as the national buckeye. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you are not sure of your major, you might want to consider some of the more generic scholar programs.
(e.g. Mount Leadership).
And it is OK to be in a scholar’s program that is not an exact match, it makes for a more diverse college experience.
And being in a scholar’s program gives you some specific perks such as a designated dorm, priority class scheduling, and a cohort group.
That said, my understanding is that you can decline participation in the program, with no penalty or fall out.
Perhaps someone else can verify that.
