Is it worth taking scholars program at the CC if your goal is to transfer to UC Berkeley? If I take the scholars program classes, I would be eligible for TAP with UCLA but from my understanding Berkeley doesn't acknowledge the scholars classes. It might mess up my GPA too because I'd have to cram 15 units of scholar classes within 1 or 2 semesters. I wouldn't mind getting TAP certified but I am worried it would jeopardize my GPA..

If you cannot handle honors work, your not cut out for Berkeley anyway, sorry if that sounds rude but its the truth. A Berkeley student can do honors community college work like it was pre-school.

Not if he/she has to work while taking those classes… I got a 4.0 taking 23 units last semester but if i was working fulltime like some of my classmates i doubt i would have had time for multivariable calculus.

If you don’t know the difference between “your” and “you’re” YOU’RE not cut out for Berkeley or UCLA, sorry but that’s the truth.

On a more serious and ACCURATE note, I would say that if the rigor of the coursework is going to overwhelm you and thus be detrimental to your GPA don’t take that program. If you’re good enough to get A’s in those classes, I don’t think TAP will be necessary if your GPA is high.

Simply put: don’t jeopardize your GPA for something you might not be able to get done well anyway and for something that only guarantees you admittance to UCLA when you could very well end up at UCB if you follow regular coursework.

Hopefully I made sense…I’m operating on very little sleep; I’ll edit this when I have the time to make it clearer.

The rigor of Scholars Options also depends on the course itself. For one of my classes, all that was required was to read a 200 page novel and have a discussion at the end of the semester (aka read 200 pages in 16 weeks), while I had to write a 15-20 page research paper for another.

Also Tap doesn’t guarantee admission to UCLA it just gives you priority admission and a choice of a alternate major. Although my honors department head mentioned that honors does look good toward UCB.

Also found this on my CCC website

But like Nick was saying above you shouldn’t jeopardize your gpa if your unsure if you can handle it. I’ve taken two honors course last semester, and I’m taking 3 this semester with plans to take more. But they’ve all had different projects for me to complete from reading a book and a 3 page paper to 10 page research papers. I’ve also done powerpoints and presented them and some computer programing. What I’m saying is it depends on the class and what the teacher wants.

Nick,

As I said before, I am not trying to pick a fight. It just seems that honors courses should not be a problem for someone with Berkeley aspirations. As for my grammatical error, this is an online forum not an article in the new York Times.

Also, I think I said pretty much the same you did. However, I think it would be wrong for us to insist for the kid to take honors coursework, achieve a 4.0 and then find that he is overwhelmed at Berkeley.

I failed out of Northeastern and am not at CC. I took 36 units in one quarter and got a 4.0 whilst working. It is not impossible to-do. Besides if everyone had a Berkeley degree, then that degree would be worthless.
