Just out of curiosity, what kind of gpa/ test scores usually get an applicant into each of the honors programs at UMD? Preferably ACT scores

Most applicants to UMD take the SAT..... I think that around 1400/1600 (CR +M) is the honors general guideline (but it is NOT a hard and fast rule) GPA should be similarly high, but if you've got some spectacular time-consuming ECs (think SIEMENS, etc) that's not a hard and fast rule, either. Gemstone is a subset of honors, and is supposed to be based from the application questions about working with other people across disciplines, etc. It's not just people who have the highest ##s of the honors pool.

Scholars is also GPA/test scores related....cutoffs are maybe a bit lower than honors, but are also related to the apps questions.

thanks a lot

Scholars typically average 1300 SAT and 4.0 weighted GPA

Students invited into Honors for fall 2006 had an average weighted GPA of 4.29; the average SAT score was 1410 (math + critical reading). (about 900 students admitted every year)

Gemstone students invited for fall 2007 had an average weighted GPA of 4.5, and average SAT score of 1467.

What were the averages for Honors Humanities?

I was upset because I knew which essays were intended for which program and catered my answers to them and I was honest too. I didn't get into honors or gemstone (my essay emphatically expressed my sincere interest to be in gemstone) and I had a 4.6 weighted, and 3.91 unweighted, amazing ECs, etc. but did not take the SAT--maybe that did it? I took ACT once only and got a 28. (Which is equivalent to a 1260/1600). I didn't even get into scholars first round--had to apply for waitlist, and got in after writing a 4 page single spaced essay. Good job UMD!

rsn09, your ACT score is most likely the reason you didn't get into honors. You can, however, enter the honors program as a sophomore, I think. Check it out on UMD's site.
