Hey, is anyone else thinking about/registered for the Scholars2Sooners event in February at OU? Currently they are one of my top-choice schools, so I decided to head to Norman and visit when this opportunity was extended. I would love to talk about it!
My daughter and I plan to attend! We learned about it when we visited OU last year but haven’t gotten an official invite yet. DD is NMSF. Did you get an invitation in the mail or snail mail?
@3scoutsmom, I got an e-mail from the National Scholars Office on December 15th.
Thanks for the heads up! My D has been crazy with finals, I’ll ask her to check her email!
What’s your intended major? Are you in state?
We are in Texas and DD plans to major in meteorology.
I’m currently thinking about Political Science or Economics with law school to follow. I hail from the academic wilderness of Utah.
I’m running into a small problem - there don’t appear to be any flights into OKC from SLC on Sunday morning. I’m traveling alone and financially challenged, so I don’t really want to get a hotel that night…
@UTilitarian Your should let the Scholars Office know of your problem. They may be able to help out.
My d says she hasn’t received an email yet
Thanks for the advice, @STEMFamily. I’ll be sure to do that. Hmmm, @3scoutsmom, I’m not sure why that would happen. I received it at the e-mail address I have given for standardized tests and for my OU application.
@UTilitarian I called the National Merit Scholars office today and explained we didn’t get the email, I was shocked there was someone there to answer the phone! It’s all worked out now so we’ll see you in February
It has been our experience that the OU NMS office is easy to get in touch with, fast to respond, professional, helpful and accommodating. They also told us that if D had any problems as a student that she wasn’t sure how to handle that she should turn to them. Fortunately, she hasn’t had any issues after 1.5 years that she needed assistance with, but it is comforting to know that she has the NMS office to turn to just in case. We have been so impressed at the level of support she has received from various offices (e.g., study abroad, advising), academic guidance, and faculty involvement with the students. OU was not even on our list initially, but at this point I can say that both student and parents feel that OU was a great choice for D. Just in case you are wondering, I am not compensated by OU in any way for my comments :).
@UTilitarian did you get something worked out with the Scholars Office? We’ll be driving (6+ hours depending on traffic) so we plan to arrive on Saturday and will stay over and leave Tuesday morning. I’ll also have my S18 with us and will be touring UT Dallas on the way home on Tuesday.
Looks like we’ll also be at OU for a quick trip at the end of January too for Audition Days for the School of Music (one of D’s minors). She hopes to audition on 1/29 because she has UIL on 1/30 boy is that going to be a tough weekend! I’ll pick her up directly from school on Thursday and we’ll drive back as soon as her audition is over on Friday.
I’ll be delighted to meet you, @3scoutsmom. It will be interesting to see other NMSF and parents. My schools just has me and one other, and I have been acquainted with him long enough to become accustomed to his quirks; I’m excited to see what the rest are like. Currently I have a flight reserved so as to get into OKC at 1 p.m. on Sunday and depart at 7 p.m. on Monday, but I’m considering arranging other accommodations and flying out Tuesday. That certainly sounds like an intense weekend; I hope she performs well.
I very much appreciate your comments, @ohmmom. I’m the youngest child of four, but none of my siblings have considered OOS schools. I’ve felt rather uninformed and unprepared for many aspects of the college search and application process. OU is one of my foremost options, so it’s great to hear that they are as helpful and appealing as they appear.
Hi! Our D and my husband are planning to go for the Scholars2Sooners event. We live in Wisconsin. I haven’t booked the flights yet, but it is looking like they will need to fly in on Saturday. We have had amazing experiences with the National Scholars Program office, too.
I hope everyone enjoys their visits. The Scholars office will be much more helpful than I, but if you have any questions for a current NMF student, just let me know. I’m more than happy to talk about the school, Norman, or anything else.
I have three or four close friends who work as students in the office and I can tell you that they are all very excited for the weekend. You’ll all enjoy it.
@WImom94 and @UTilitarian I’m so looking forward to meeting you both at S2S! Anyone else lurking here on CC going? We need someway to recognize CCers there, any one have any cleaver ideas?
This will be our second visit (actually third if you count our whirlwind trip for instrumental auditions on 1/29). DD got a nice letter from Mr. Nunley recognizing that she had already visited and mentioning he would be looking to see how could make this visit different and more in-depth which is exactly what we hoped for.
I’m glad at least two other CCer’s will be there. I’m feeling kind of lonely with the only kid listed at OU on both the parents of and students of threads of lists of accepted colleges!
Hi @3scoutsmom and @UTilitarian! I won’t be going to S2S. Our daughter and I did an OU visit last summer, but my husband wasn’t able to join us. He and our daughter are flying down to OKC Friday night and flying home Monday night. With a max of 40 students attending, hopefully you can easily connect. Do you think there will be an opportunity for the students to explore the possibility of finding roommates during the weekend? I will miss having another peek at OU, but know the father-daughter time will be great for the two of them
@3scoutsmom, I’m an avid CCer myself. I browse more than I comment, but it has been one of the most helpful and informative tools in the college search for one whose parents are unaware of college stuff. We’ll have to devise a method to recognize the others… @WImom94, I regret that I won’t see you there. I don’t get in until Sunday, but I’m staying until Tuesday. I really hope I will meet other probable OU students with whom I can chat and stay in contact with, and I don’t doubt some will be scoping out roommates.
