Hello, I just got my SAT scores back and honestly I was not expecting to score as high as I did. I am also in the top ten percent of my class. I was wondering if I should start looking into merit scholarships and if anybody knows what schools offer scholarships for SAT scores. Thanks you.

Hi,

Congrats on your scores. I’m guessing that the 1400 is your Math + CR.

What is your GPA?

Yes, there are some schools that will give you some good merit scholarships. Some schools have competitive merit and some have assured merit for stats.

For instance…

The University of Alabama would give you full tuition scholarship (including out of state). That scholarship is worth about $85,000 if your GPA is at least a 3.5 GPA (weighted on transcript) and you apply before Dec 1st. . This is an assured scholarship for stats.

Presidential Scholarship for out of state students

An out-of-state first-time freshman student who meets the December 1st scholarship priority deadline, has a 32-36 ACT or 1400-1600 SAT score and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will be selected as a Presidential Scholar and will receive the value of out-of-state tuition for four years.

Also…if tuition is increased, the scholarship is increased as well…and covers up to 20 credits per semester…which is very generous.

What did you plan on majoring?

If you were to major in engineering or computer science, then you’d get an additional 2500 per year.

But, either way, you’d get the full tuition.

Yes, the 1400 is on my Math+CR. I am most likely going to major in history. The University of Alabama scholarship is pretty enticing and that is the first one I noticed. Would I be able to get a pretty good merit scholarships at any other similarly ranked Universities, or is Alabama a rare exception? Thank you.

The full tuition scholarship for a 1400 M+CR is unusual for a school ranked similarly to Bama (#79). You will find some other full tuition scholarships (for those stats) at schools that are lower ranked, but not similarly ranked. Bama has some wealthy donors that are underwriting those scholarships. The school currently has about 2000 students with that full tuition scholarship and over 550 with National merit scholarships. Roughly 10% of incoming frosh have been awarded that full tuition scholarship.

As you can imagine, awarding those scholarships is a very expensive endeavor…that full tuition scholarship is worth over $85,000.

Great, you’re a history major. Bama is very strong in history.

Thanks a lot for your help. How do I go about finding schools that offer large scholarships?
