Scholarship and Financial Aid

my financial aid advisro told me to submit my efan by sept. 1.

scholarships are tax free if used to tuition purposes so isnt it expected to put it on your efan on the outside awards section? plus, the awarder probably filed the scholarship on their tax returns so the irs knows that you receieved a scholarship. so if you tell ucla about the scholarship, the irs will know its used for tuition purposes right?

some of my scholarship money is in my checkign account but one of the scholarships is being sent directly to ucla. i reported almost all the awards (even the ones in my personal accont). either way im going to have to use the money for tuition if i want it to be tax free.

jinobi, that 29500 is the amount in my efan. I don't think it will be given to me all at once. (why would they give it to me all at once? I kind of don't understand your question).

in my efan, I have outside scholarships of $7500, $3000, and $15,000, and the Pell Grant for 4050 totaling 29550.

SO, if I do accept another outside $2000 scholarship, then I get to keep this 2k?

I'm so confused.

vega07:
What I meant was if your scholarships were a one-time thing, or were spread out annually. In my case, I have a $40,000 scholarship that's given to me over 4 years; thus, I really only receive $10,000 per year from that scholarship.

You do get to keep your $2000 scholarship, as FAO can't take away your Pell Grant. Once again, verify this with FAO. Your situation may be different than mine.

Thanks for all the input, but I guess the situation can't be helped. Ah well.

vega07, I was just talking to the financial aid office, and like Jinobi said, they'll only subtract outside scholarship money from university grants, or, (like in my case), university scholarships given through financial need.

jinobi and vega, do you mind i ask what scholarships you guys won? cause those are pretty big chunks of dinero. haha

NNNOOOOOO!!!!

under the assumption that I will not be overawarded, I denied the 2k scholarship. NOOO, NOOOOO, NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

oh well...
