my son transfered to hofstra fall 2014 from nassau community (honors student). he was given a $16k annual scholarship with the usual requirements (gpa and full time status).
after a year of hard work and studies he earned a 3.96 gpa and completed 25 credits. he even made the provosts list.
well yesterday he received a letter advising him his scholarship isnt being renewed cus he didnt earn the minimum of 24 credits!
this was a big ‘****’. since its a weekend we couldnt speak to anyone but did our own investigating and found one of the classes he took in his 1st semester he completed with an A but says ‘attempted credits 3’ ‘earned credits 0’
this made no sense so we looked further and discovered the possible cause is that the class in question is a redundant class that he received and transferred credits from nassau community.
this is terribly upsetting and his courses were selected with guidance and approval from his advisor. the course, while it was transferable is technically different and has a different name in both schools. he had no clue it was redundant and trusted his advisor to direct him. obviously he wouldnt have signed up for a class just for the hell of it…he thought he was earning credits for it.
needless to say he’s going to appeal it but besides the scholarship, he just wasted thousands on a course he didnt need!
any advise or insight on how to fix this mess or the appeal process? He’s never written an appeal letter.
