scholarship application from UCSB, UCB

Question- my son rec'd an e-mail from UCSB and UCB yesterday inviting him to apply for certain scholarships at these schools. Does this mean he will be admitted? It really doesn't clearly specify if he has been admitted! Why do they send these things if they haven't notified the student yet?

Depends on the scholarship. If it's not regents, then it's not a definite acceptance.

Mary seem to receive these, my D included, and the focus seems to be those things identified by checking off all possible options of special groups/ interests on the UC Apps. i.e. "are you the child of a descendent of a duck breeder?"

yeah it's because you've ticked off those scholarship boxes on your application! I got an invite from UCSB too, but it clearly states you only get the scholarship if you get ADMITTED and enroll into UCSB, so it doesn't mean you're in for sure.

and, the Alumni associations of each campus e-mail everyone about the scholarships that the Alumni Assoc may offer. But, the Alumni Assoc has zero to do with Admissions. As frut notes, the only early admissions notices are to those few invited to apply for a Regents/Chancellor's scholarships.

It's not any indication of acceptance but on other forum(UCLA), someone called UCLA admission office and they said only top 30% got the email for UCLA Alumni scholarship.
D got an email from UCB for leadership scholarship and UCLA Alumni scholarship.

Would they send these emails to people in the reject list?

I'm guessing there is no reject list.... yet!

Please note that this email message does not in any way reflect your admission status. The alumni scholarship process is completely separate from the UC Berkeley admission selection process. You are no more or less likely to be admitted to UC Berkeley because you have received this invitation and your decision to apply or not for Alumni Scholarships will not affect your admissions status.

I think that pretty much says it all....

No guarantee of acceptance, but I'm sure they won't send email to people they reject either. First phase of review is done.
