Is he messing up his chances? He's applied for scholarship(s) based on his previous intention to go out of town which would have required more tuition and costs because he would live away from home. He's now seriously considering staying home and attending a local four year university. That decision will make his financial 'need' drop in half to around 9k a year.

Will scholarship agencies look badly on this decision? We are planning on waiting to notify them if and when they offer a scholarship and not before.

Is he applying for outside scholarships that have big awards? Or, are the awards for a set amount, but you think he may be given added consideration because he applied to expensive schools?

Is your son now planning on staying local all 4 years?

Kids change their minds, don’t notify anyone yet.

There are all sorts of scholarships. Several of my son’s never even ask “where” the scholarship will be used and of course a few were college scholarships specific to that school. A couple of them that were non school specific ask for a “first choice” and a “second choice.” I wouldn’t be too concerned unless some of the scholarships are “school specific” in which case I wouldn’t stop the train yet…kids do change their minds right up to the last minute.

I agree with mom2collegekids. I kind of did the same thing. I applied to scholarships and put Amherst down as a choice, but I’m considering changing my mind to Barnard. If anything, just wait it out. He might end up going with his original choice. Also, you can always change the school name if he decides to change schools - my brother did that. I’m sure the scholarship agencies won’t assume that he’ll get into the school that he put down because there are a variety of things that can affect that decision in the end (Financial Aid packages, denials, etc).

If and when he gets the scholarships, then you can sort through the details. Some times there is a step in there that addresses this. “Congrats, you won the XYZ scholarship. Contact our office for payment details” – so the check isn’t coming directly to your student – it will be issued directly to the college. When that happens, there should be criteria checking involved (Ahh, we don’t fund studies at the Tatoo and Weed Institute. . . ).
