Scholarship asks for Social Security #?

Hello, one of the scholarships i'm applying for asks for my Social Security number, noting

"We will not be able to award your winnings without a Social Security number. Your Social Security number will only be used to report your scholarship winnings to the IRS. We realize and respect your wish to keep this information private at this time. "

Is this true? It's not a financial need thing or college related one. Otherwise, the scholarship seems legit.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, it is true. Your scholarship income can be taxed by the IRS. Therefore, they need your SSN.

Taxguy explained this at length in the Parents' Forum--
