Do a high percentage of the Trustee/Presidential/Dean Scholarship candidates get accepted into the program?

That’s a good question.

It seems that about 300 Trustee finalists are invited to Explore USC, about 200 or so are awarded Trustee scholarships (full tuition for 4 years), and around 125-135 matriculate.

As for Presidential (half-tuition, 4 years), about 450 are invited to interview, 300-350ish are offered Presidential, and about 250ish (?) matriculate. Sorry, I don’t have the Presidential numbers handy, so if another poster has better numbers, please post here.

^^^Also should add–those Trustee candidates who do not receive Trustee scholarships are most often given Presidential scholarships. I haven’t heard any numbers about how many of those matriculate to USC. Since these students have such outstanding resumes, they often have many choices in colleges down the line. There is also, perhaps, a bit of a backlash when a highly deserving applicant does not get offered the highest possible scholarship. It’s unfortunate, but understandable.

When very valuable awards are handed out, hurt feelings might follow for those who felt entitled to more. I think everyone ends up a winner, though. Hard work in high school, plus leadership in clubs & activities, garner you so much in life–most especially your excellent education, service to your community, and the appreciation of striving for excellence. Those qualities will lead to success whichever path you walk.

End of mom-advice!

Best of luck to all.

Haha thanks! That gives me a lot of hope! :)

Actually, here’s another question - how long does it generally take to receive an interview invitation in the mail after receiving the acceptance letter?

In 2008 it took one loooong week.

madbean… do u know if NMF will be given a shot at trustee scholarship ? or are they all be awarded the presidential ?

“do u know if NMF will be given a shot at trustee scholarship ? or are they all be awarded the presidential ?”
You HAVE to interview, in order to have a chance at being bumped up to Trustee. If you’re not invited to interview then no chance at Trustee.

And it is also possible that a NMF would receive an invitation to interview for Trustee.

Thanks. do they need actual CCS profile b4 acceptance ? Anyone ?

I don’t get it. Why are some people in the stats thread posting that they are “trustees candidate”? Where do you find that information? I was also invited to the Explore USC thing. But what does that mean?

hougang, the CSS Profile has nothing to do with acceptance. It is one of the need-analysis forms you must submit to apply for need-based financial aid. The other is the FAFSA. Both are due February 2nd (next Tuesday). You must submit them by February 2nd even if you have not yet been admitted. Please read http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/839970-faq-usc-financial-aid-2010-a.html for more information.

Merit scholarships are not based on financial need, so no CCS is required. Trustee & the non-NMF Presidential finalists are selected from applications received before the first deadline based on merit only (including scores, gpa, rec letters, ECs, awards, special circumstances, achievements outside of school, leadership, etc), must attend Explore and interview for the scholarship, and be selected by the panel. Some may be bumped up to a higher award (great!), while others may be offered a lesser award (so all is not lost!).

In addition to this process, USC offers Presidential level merit scholarships (1/2 tuition- plus extra $1000/year for 4 years) to all admitted students who are NMF and report USC as their first choice school. This is an automatic award that appears when student submits their enrollment agreement. (But it is not guaranteed that every NMF will be offered admission to USC–alas, we’ve seen CC members here each year who report disappointment and surprise at this.)

It is not guaranteed that every NMF will be offered a chance to interview for the Trustee scholarship, since NMF is based mostly on PSAT, while Trustee/regular Presidential are based on a deep review of each student’s full application. It’s also realistic to remember that LESS than 1% of all students who apply to USC each year are invited to interview for Trustee. We see a lot of very high achievers here on CC, so the numbers may seem skewed. But it’s still very very rare.

Hope that clears up some questions.

Thank you everyone for ur input. D just got her acceptance letter …yeah !!.. She is a NMSF and will see if she will be selected for trustee …fingers crossed

oops just read some postings … looks like she didn’t get any interview notification… doesn’t that mean she is not a scholarship candidate

The merit scholarship (Trustee and Pres) candidacy letters go out a few days after the acceptance has been received. There’s no mention of merit scholarship candidacy or interview notification in the first acceptance package.
There’s also the Dean’s Scholarship, which is quarter tuition for 4 years, which does not require the interview. Those who receive that will be informed later on.

Trustee Scholarship Finalist notification! Just got it today!

@andromeda89 - How did you find out about Trustee? I only know because of the website glitch a couple days ago.

Letter (dated Jan 28) telling me that I was a finalist! It comes with this “Experience USC 2010” booklet saying that I must attend an Explore USC overnight program either Feb 22/23 or Feb 25/26 and there I will be interviewed by a panel.
