My unweighted is a 3.26 but I think that in the packet I got from the school they were taking into consideration weighted gpa. I'm not sure what a 97 is on their scale so I'm not too sure how I'll fare. I really want the reduced tuition + 2k/year.

You have a 3.26 UW (presumably out of 4.0?) but the weighted is reported as a 97 (presumably a percentage)? This doesn’t make sense… can you elaborate on this?

The in-state tuition + $2K scholarship is the McKissick, which for last year the averages were 1355/1600 on the SAT and 4.31/4.0 for GPA. So you are way over for your SAT score. In fact, that score puts you in Honors College territory.

My D got a McKissick which much lower SATs than you, although with a higher weighted GPA.

I hope you applied already, assuming you are a senior in HS, as the scholarship deadline was yesterday.

Where are you from? I think if you are farther away you have a better chance.

Why do you think this is true…“Where are you from? I think if you are farther away you have a better chance.”

I think it is true because SC wants geographic diversity, so if you live in a state from which they don’t typically get a lot of students, I think your chances of getting a scholarship are higher, and you can probably be more towards the bottom of the curve and still get it.

Just my opinion though, AFAIK SC doesn’t publish any data to confirm this one way or the other.

Hope you are right because I live in California… my GPA is 4.2 and ACT 32 so I am keeping my fingers crossed

yankees – Is your GPA weighted or unweighted? Just to give you a little hope, I scored a 32 on the ACT and had a 4.2 unweighted GPA (5.0 weighted) and received one of the higher scholarships here.

CockNotTrojan…which scholarship did you get?

@notrichenough

As far as the differing GPA scales go, I don’t know, I hate it, and it’s given me hell as far as other scholarship programs go. That’s why I’m confused for this scholarship. I know they use weighted but since it’s on a 100 point scale I don’t know what they’ll do.

And yes, I applied already but I don’t think they’ve received SAT scores…does that mean I’m disqualified?? I thought the deadline was just for honors and mcnair!

I am from New Jersey so hopefully that works in my favor.

^ I think you are right - Nov. 15 is the deadline for the Honors College and McNair.

It’s December 1 for the other scholarships. And you apparently have until Feb. 1 to get all of your test scores and transcripts submitted.

Okay, thanks! I got really worried for a second.

If one assumes a 95 = 4.0, a 97 would be about a 4.1/4.0.

With your test scores you would have been a great candidate for the Honors College.

Good luck with your applications!

^But wouldn’t a 100/100 be a 4.0?

It really depends on the school. At my high school, a 97 was an A+, which was a 4.3. For honors classes, that would have been a 4.8, and for AP that would have been a 5.3

In South Carolina public schools, a 97 is a 4.5 in College Prep classes, 5.0 in Honors, and a 5.5 in AP/IB.

It might be easier for you to take your report cards and calculate your GPA by yourself. A basic rule of thumb is to add .5 for Honors classes and 1.0 for AP classes. Your school may calculate differently, but that can show you what the ballpark figure is for your GPA weighted, instead of just having an arbitrary number.

I know that I had a 2.9 uw in high school, but a 3.4 weighted. So honors/AP classes make a huge difference. I think I ended up graduating with like a 3.5 because of all the AP courses I took.

OP if you really want to know, call admissions and ask them how they compute/view GPA. While SC does have uniform grading scale, USC is use to dealing with applicants from all over that go to schools with different methodology. They may recalculate or they may take what guidance sends them. Frankly you Guidance counselor should be able to help with this. Your transcript should show your GPA and should also have the way it is calculated so colleges can tell what it mean. We had to call our GC to find out how to report Ds score as non-weighted for one school and she knew what they wanted.

Also, USC doesn’t ask for midyear grades, but if your fall semester grades are really strong and increase your GPA you may be able to update your application and strengthen your case.

@ yankees - I received the McNair scholarship with the same credentials as you. PM me with any questions… I can give you my email so we can talk there. I hope you did the Honors application, because that is what puts you in for it!

My son received an email that the Nov 15 deadline was extended to Nov. 23 for certain states. He is not home so I am not sure which states. They might be the coastal states that were affected by Sandy.

With a 3.86 UW, 4.38 W, and a 34 ACT, what are my chances of being accepted into the honors college and getting scholarships?

^^I say good chance for some type of scholarship. Honors takes into account the entire supplement with essays and ECs counting as well since lots of applicants have equally high stats but I think you have a good chance there as well but really depends of applicant pool.
