Has anyone received their scholarship awards via snail mail yet? I was told I won’t see anything on the Howdy portal unless I file the FAFSA.

We filed the FAFSA knowing that it would not result in any FA, but that several schools use some of that info in determining other sorts of FA. ANYWAY - we still haven’t seen anything on the TAMU FA Portal. We DID get a letter from TAMU Scholarships & Financial Aid today though. It was notifying us that we had to go online to complete the Student Data Form. The letter was dated 26-Feb. I had already completed the data form somewhere around the 23rd or 24th - BEFORE the letter was written. Funny thing though is that although the letter was dated the 26th, it wasn’t post-marked until 4-March. I’m not surprised that some people are experiencing such delays in email and snail-mail both.

i got that letter aswell, but i had already completed my student data form last week

Hmm… we did not get a letter. I guess my son had already filled that in. We also will not get any FA from our FAFSA, but I started it before my son accepted at A&M so I went ahead and finished the silly thing.

how do you know you didnt get any AID? dont the schools have to send you an offer??

I received notification of my scholarship today in the mail. So yes, they are beginning to send stuff out.

DS got his scholarship letter Saturday. No word on financial aid.

D got letter with scholarship offer yesterday. We also recieved the letter asking for Student Data form after we had already filled it out.

We got the Student Data Form letter but hadn’t filled it out yet. Doh!

you can fill it out online.

He did. Unfortunately, no outside scholarships to report yet.

@oosmom Question for you -

When you noticed awards posted on your financial aid portal in the “Award Summary for Academic Period 2010-2011” section, do you also know if there additional entries in the “Status Summary for Academic Period 2010-2011” section?

On the Status page, we have no “incomplete requirements”, and we have three “completed requirments”: 1) received student data form, 2) received application for financial aid, and 3) good academic standing

We still have not received a letter, email, or other financial aid portal notification. I’m wondering if these are being worked alphabetically - our last name is Turner - and we’re in Maryland, so maybe the mail is taking a bit longer, but that wouldn’t change email or online notification.

Lack of aid, and especially lack of OOS waiver could send my son to Univ of MD where he was accepted into their Scholars program, but with awards yet to be determined. In-state cost of MD is less than half the total cost of A&M, which is his far-and-away top choice.

Hmm, I wonder if there’s a way where residents of one state could trade their in-state status to someone from another state located where they want to go to school? Anyone in TX want to come to a school in MD? :)

Wouldn’t that be great! tdck, my D’s status page looks exactly like yours. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that you will get some good news. We were exactly like you, A&M - first choice, local - third choice. All depended on scholarships. We did take D to a program where she spent the day with a student at the local school (UConn) and she had a great time. The purpose was to make her feel better if that’s where she ended up. I think it worked. We had also talked that school up to make it easier too, if necessary. (that was hard for me being an aggie, but I knew it would help her) She had decided she could be happy at either, but still preferred A&M (of course).

oosmom - Have you been listening in on our discussions here at the house!? Yes, EXACT same situation here. I’m from Texas, though I didn’t go to college there, but we have lots of friends and relatives in the area. I’d love for him to go there and be able to experience “my” state since he’s lived in the Mid-Atlantic his whole life. He’s aiming for the Bush School of Gov’t, so the education would be top-notch too. But we’ll wait for that letter (only Clemson mail today!) and see what happens once we have all the info. If he ends up at Maryland, I imagine he’ll be a proud “Terp” soon enough.

What type of scholarships are OOS applicants receiving? Nothing has happened for me yet.

D got the Opportunity award (1000) and the Lechner scholarship (2500).

According to FA, some of the scholarships, as dictated by the donors, include out of state tuition waivers for the recipients of those scholarships who also live out of state.

Unfortunately, we’re still waiting on an update from FA of any sort - good, bad, or otherwise. And on another thread in the A&M forum I just read that someone noticed that one or more of the scholarships shown in their FA Portal have actually gone away. Someone else said that since Howdy is only a year or so old it’s not unusual that they’re having troubles.

Oh well, we’ll see what today brings.

tdck: Found out today that DS’s accepted scholarship vanished from his portal because they are switching systems. Apparently, they must remove it on the old system before entering it on the new one! Don’t get me started…how about letting people know this in advance or not entering it in the old system at all. Better yet, don’t grant access to the FA portal until everything is posted and correct! Feelin’ mighty grumpy! :(

Any idea why they’re changing systems?

I totally agree. We were told a couple of weeks ago that things would be posted at that time, and that if nothing else everyone should pretty much see a Stafford loan available if nothing else. And so far we still see nothing except indications that there are untold problems causin delays and frustration. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for FA to pst or email out at least some information indicating when things will be “final”, at least until they find out who commits and who doesn’t so they can do a second round of awards.

tdck: Feeling your frustration! Just got of the phone with A&M. Apparently, they are merging two systems. Unlike the old system, this new one will generate one letter with all the latest awards posted on it. No more multiple award letters (one from honors, one from department, one from school as a whole, etc). This letter will match what is on the Howdy Portal. The new and improved award letters should go out around March 15; however, you should be able to see things on the portal before then. I also learned that if your student has been awarded a study abroad stipend, Director’s Supplemental Award, or Transition Award, those will not be posted on the portal. If your student is a NMF, the National Merit A&M Sponsorship Award will not post until April when A&M finds out from NMSC if a student is being sponsored by NM or by a corporation. If they are not being sponsored by one of those two, the student will be sponsored by A&M; the award will be posted at that time. From talking to the Honors Program, I think they are as frustrated as we are. Hopefully, we won’t have any more vanishing scholarships…poof !Feeling a little less grumpy! :]
