Scholarship day

Is everyone invited to participate in scholarship day?

I feel bad jumping the gun and making plane reservations before we even hear if son is accepted, but was wondering if I'm really jumping ahead, assuming he'll be asked to participate in the scholarship competition.

I think I've seen the dates on the Marquette website, but since they are in February, and since acceptances don't go out until close to that time, it may be too late to get a cheap flight.

My husband and I have discussed it, and we have decided that if son does get accepted to Marquette, we have to seize this opportunity if it's available to him.

Son is applying as a biomedical engineering major.

Thanks for any info.

There’s no way your son won’t be accepted but it sounds like we should hear by about Jan 10 or so, right? That would still leave you 5-6 weeks advance notice to book.

Monte,

I would go ahead and book those tix, especially if you are planning to go Southwest. Don’t forget that Southwest tickets are cancellable. While you may not get a cash refund, you will apply the entire amount towards future travel. I do that all of the time.

I have a story about not getting in and scholarships. We have developed a relationship with some people at the Nursing school (my late mother-in-law was a member of the class of 1954, and we had funeral donations sent to the nursing school in her honor). A member of the Nursing School told my husband that a year or two ago, an applicant was wait-listed, but she decided to take the scholarship test anyway. She wound up winning one of the scholarships. The nursing school made the call to the Admissions Office and got her admitted immediately.

If your son tests well and he really wants to go to Marquette, that’s something to think about.

Oh, we hear that early? I thought it was closer to February.

Thanks for your kind words about my son.

Hoping for the best for your son as well.

Have a safe and blessed Christmas.

Well, don’t call that a promise. Seems to me that our kindred souls here have indicated second half of Jan as the fateful time of acceptance.

staceyglow, that’s quite a story. Those scholarship competitions are fairly brutal. At least the engineering one is: 12 given to 400 contestants. Ugh.

Thanks, Stacey, for the vote of confidence. While we’re not counting on son earning a scholarship, it’s something we can’t pass up. Plus, I think the schools do an open house on that day, and that would be worth attending.

Honestly, I think one of the main points of the scholarship competition is to entice top students to come check out the campus, so I am sure the open house is nice. I went to one about a year and a half ago and they do a very nice job.

Also FYI, there is a scholarship competition in place in acknowledgment that families out of the Midwest might not want to travel to Marquette to take a test.

Son will be applying for the Pere Marquette scholarship as well. We’re trying for anything and everything we can. There used to be a National Alumni Club scholarship that we were hoping to apply for, but that is no longer available. I encourage anyone applying to look into that scholarship as well. We’re trying to cover all our bases.

We did get an email about the scholarship days, as well as a reminder in the mail about applying for other applicable scholarships.

Just made my reservations to and from.

We’re flying into Milwaukee, and hope to make it in time for the Friday night activities. Plane lands at 4 pm, so hope we can enjoy whatever goes on the night before.

We’ll fly home Sunday morning, so need to get info about mass on Saturday.

Will we be able to go to a vigil mass on Saturday at Gesu church? Will the scholarship day activities be over in time for that?

Praying for good weather and a safe trip. Our layovers are in Atlanta on the way up and Minneapolis on the way back. Allowing at least 2 hours between flights for delays.

The planes we are flying on are 757, 737, DC9-50 and DC9-30.

Anyone familiar with these planes, as far as carryon space? I’ve flown 737’s many times and there’s ample room overhead for a “pilot case” carryon. Not familiar with the other models. Hoping we don’t have to check any luggage and can just grap our grips and run to the next plane.

Now, when will my son get his homework done? That’s the question.

Thanks for any help with this. Praying for a smooth trip up and back.

Monte,

I do a ton of traveling for work, so I have the carry-on only packing down to a science. I actually went on a week-long vacation with only carry-on luggage. Granted, it was mostly a swim suit and shorts, but still…

First of all, you are really only going to be there for 2 days. That is only 2 changes of clothes (1 1/2 if you wear the same pair of pants more than once). If you want to bring down something bulky like a sweater or blazer, wear it onto the plane. And here is my big cheat: you are allowed one carry-on and one personal item (like a purse). I bring a giant tote bag as my “personal item” and stick my smaller purse in there along with other stuff.

Your son should bring his school backpack with his homework in it as his personal item. And if he is like my son, he will not pack much more than a couple of shirts and a couple pairs of underwear, and will have plenty of room in his carry-on luggage for any of your overflow.

Here’s a link to the on-campus Mass Schedule:

[Worship | Campus Ministry | Marquette University](<a href=“Worship // Campus Ministry // Marquette University”>Worship // Campus Ministry // Marquette University)

Looks like they don’t hold the Saturday midnight mass at Schroeder any more; that was really popular in my day. Wherever you end up going to church, make sure you check out Gesu. I got married there. Maybe someday, your son will, too!

Thanks, Stacey, for the packing tips! Do you think we can wear our big winter coats on the plane? I will try the purse inside the tote thing. Hoping son can bring his books onboard, because really don’t want to risk losing those in baggage with changing flights.

The planes are 757, 737, DC9-50, and DC9-30. Do those planes allow carryons the size of a pilot case?

We definitely want to go to Gesu for mass, or maybe the Joan of Arc chapel. Want to go to mass with the students.

You can certainly wear your heavy coat on board.

I don’t know about all the types of planes you mention, but definitely on Southwest, you can take the largest allowable bag by the FAA.

Unfortunately, not flying Southwest up or back. Going Northwest/Delta both ways. Had booked a Southwest originally, but was a late flight and worried about missing the scholarship day. Could not get good flights home Southwest at all. Stopovers in Atlanta on the way up and Saint Paul on the way back. Praying for good weather. At least we’ll have our heavy coats if we get stuck in Saint Paul.

Makes me sick that I couldn’t get refundable flights. If son doesn’t get accepted, I’m out 600 bucks for plane tickets.

Hi Montegut,

Even if the smaller planes won’t fit a standard carry-on, you can check it at the gate and won’t be charged for a checked bag. If yours fits on a 737, you’re good to go!

Montegut, the chances of your flights being canceled out of Mpls are very slim as winter is what we do here. Delayed, possibly. But canceled, no.

Oh, thanks, Beastman. I had wanted to fly through Memphis, but by the time I booked the flights, the rates had gone up by 50 bucks a seat, and with three of us, that was too much.

You can only take one test, right? How long do the tests take?

The different colleges have different test days, with open houses at the same time. If you win a scholarship from a particular college, you have to matriculate in that college.

I would suppose that if one changes majors to another school, they lose the scholarship?

For instance, if you switched from engineering to nursing and had won an engineering scholarship, I guess you would lose that scholarship. As another person would have won the nursing scholarship already, I doubt it would be replaced.

But, that is a good question. We’re far away, so wouldn’t be able to fly up for multiple weekends, but for a local, that’s a good question to ask admissions.

We’re also far away, and I don’t want to pay for the trip unless D is definitely accepted.

Doesn’t Marquette offer scholarships without attending scholarship day? We got a postcard that said something about 95% of scholarships being awarded through the admission process. The card also said something about needing to apply for scholarships before being admitted. I told D to research it, but I admit I’m very confused.
