Scholarship day

Montegut, just got e-mail with Destination Marquette dates. There is one on March 4-5 which I would suggest since it’s closer to February and you could get a better feel for the cold weather.

Argh! We got the email, too. Can’t make either weekend. I did email back that we would like to perhaps do a shadow visit if possible. Would really love son to stay overnight in a dorm, but definitely want him to go on a school day and see campus life up close.

Montegut, the overnight shadow visit does include going to classes. Your son will stay with a student that goes to the college of your son’s choice. Go to the MU site prospective students - visit campus - plan a visit. On the top left corner you will find the shadow visit link. They have the dates for them, keep in mind you need 3 weeks advance notice. If he stays overnight on a Thurs. he’ll go to class on Friday, Sun. on Mon., etc.

Thanks, news, for the heads up. I’ll check the link and dates and see if we can arrange one.

I’ll be attending the Arts and Sciences competition.

Good luck Tmac18!

My son is signed up for the engineering competition; thought he’d give it a try. Marquette is appearing to be his top choice.

For those interested, the Milwaukee Public Museum has the Dead Sea Scrolls on exhibit. We are planning to view the exhibit while we are there.

Oh, that sounds great. Would love to see that. Unfortunately, we can’t make the engineering day competition. Really wish we could, because every little bit helps.

Please post how it was. Would love to hear more about it.

We went for scholarship day last weekend. The weather was a good example of how February is in the Midwest - sunny, 20 degrees but the wind was COLD. In some places on campus you could stand in the sun and feel warm without your gloves and hat but in others where the wind caught you, you wanted to run to the next building.
The day was run quite well and there were plenty of students and their parents there - the admins said even more than last year. Get there early if you are planning to nab a bagel and a chair to sit in.
I have probably been at more than 20 college visits and admin talks between my kids. Marquette’s campus days have been well worth our trip. The one thing that has impressed me about Marquette is how they tell you the “real stuff”. The biological science people were very upfront about AP courses, honors classes and what professional schools are going to see on their applications. How to avoid the kinds of aggravating gotcha things that I’ve heard students at state schools needing to stay an extra semester to finish up.

Hi newsdrms, when you say that it increased substantially once he made his choice, did you have to talk and “bargain” with the financial aid department, or did they just send you a letter saying you get more money? Thanks.

ps41592-Once we had paid deposit and May 1st date had passed he just got a letter with a new financial aid and merit total. I understand they redistribute the aid from the students that decided not to enroll. So no “bargaining” was involved!

Daughter finally got letter. $10K. That puts her about even with the aid she got from SLU (bigger scholarship from SLU, it’s more expensive).

Looks like she is going to be a Golden Eagle!

stacey – that’s fantastic. Good for her.

Just got back from the Scholarship Day. My D did the English exam and she said there were alot of kids there- over 100 for sure. We got there at 8AM, and I thought we were going to be early, but the campus was really crowded with parents and future students there. They had a continental breakfast from 8-9 iin the Union, but it was packed with people. The parents meeting was informative about the Klingner College of Arts and Sciences. I left half way through the 2nd part of the parents meeting dealing with financial aid. It was all about filling out the FAFSA which I had done already. I met up with my daughter and we went to the browing session back at the Union, where you could talk to people in the subject area you wanted to pursue. She met one of the Psych professors, and he was very nice and talked with my D about how undergrads get to participate in research. They served lunch at the Union again, but we skipped it as the lines were so long. They had plenty of guides giving campus tours, but since we had visited already, and we didn’t feel like walking around in the cold, we skipped that. The dorms were open for tours. We did not visit McCormick as we had already seen it on our previous tour, but we toured Abbotsford. It was alot different than McCormick. Much quiter. They are triples, (like small apartments) with one room being a small area for sleeping, and the other area had desks, a kitchen area and a small bathroom. The room we saw was really cluttered and kind of a mess so it didn’t look that great. Even though the rooms were bigger, my daughter still liked McCormick better because of the social atmoshpere. We decided to call it a day as my D had visited Marquette before and we were both wiped out from the early morning drive to Marquette.
On to U of I Monday for the admitted students day.

Anyone know if you are notified either way (did/did not get the scholarship from the exam days)?

At least last year they did send letters if you did not get a scholarship.

D went to scholarship day for Nursing. Got the letter on Saturday that she did not get one. :frowning:

So, I can tell you that the nursing scholarship letters apparently went out.

Updating. Dept. of Performing Arts sent Scholarship competition letters. D did not get award :-(.

Hm, I haven’t yet received notification for English…

No notification for English here either. It’s been a month.
