I'm applying for the Lien scholarship, and the 750 word essay that is required has the following prompt:

Describe and evaluate critically an issue or problem that falls within one or more of the social or behavioral sciences [then the prompt has a list of the social/behavioral sciences offered at WashU].

How do you think I'm supposed to approach this? Is it practically supposed to be a research paper (except not formal enough to have citations and such)? Or is it supposed to be more personal than that? How analytical should it be? Should we expect the reader to know the subject area we choose (considering that I'm pretty sure it'll be read by WashU faculty), or should we act as if we're just writing to a general audience? Should I approach this differently than I would a normal college essay (i.e., focus less on "personal voice" and focus more on showing off my knowledge of the subject, or something)?

i would like to know the answers to a'ight's questions as well but for the moog bio/chem one:

Describe a biology or chemistry reading or research project in which you have recently been engaged or would like to undertake. (If you choose to discuss a large research project in which you participated, do so in a manner that will permit the Moog Committee to assess your own contributions.)

well, i did the engineering one, but was the same question as the moog. I wrote about my work as an intern and the project that i worked on. Basically, i wrote about my objectives and what i actually did. if it's something you already did, write about that, your objectives, the requirements you had to meet, how you met them, what obstacles might have been presented and how you overcame those, what other experiences you might have gained through doing th research. Try to estbliahs the importance of the research, such as why you were doing it, what it means for the future, etc. If you are describing something you wish to do, try and do the same, but i can't really help you there.

is there a format that i should follow? as in...should i doublespace the essays? include the prompts above each answer? if so, bold the prompts? etc.?
