I'm new at this Finaid process. Need some help. My family's quick estimated EFC is around $17k, the COA from ASU is around $34k and I'll be getting a $17k scholarship. After I submit the FAFSA after Jan, will I still be able to receive any Financial Aid of sorts?

Not quite sure what you’re asking. I believe you want to know, if after you get you apply to your fafsa can you still receive grants and other scholarships? Then I think the answer is yes. As long as when you’re filling out your Fafsa you do not lie about how much money you have in your bank account.

No. ASU is an OOS public for you.

OOS publics do not meet the need for OOS students (UVa is an exception). OOS publics can barely meet the need of their in-state students (and usually can’t meet their needs either.)

So…

You’ll get your $17 scholarship, which will reduce the COA to $17, and you’ll be responsible for that balance.

That may not be what you want to hear…but look at it this way…
If you hadn’t gotten the scholarship for ASU, you would have been expected to pay the entire $34k. Your EFC of $17k doesn’t really mean anything at schools that don’t meet need.

With an EFC of $17k, that indicates that you don’t qualify for federal grants. By applying for FAFSA, you’ll be able to get a Stafford loan for about $5500.

Scholarships don’t reduce EFC anyway, unless they are for an amount that would be greater than your aid at a school that gives aid.

If the COA is $34,000 and your EFC is 17,000 then your ‘need’ is $17,000. If you get a $17,000 scholarship the your remaining need is $0. So you will not have any remaining need which means no need based aid. With no unmet need you will be eligible for unsubsidized federal loans. (subsidized loans require there be need).

My question is basically after I submit my FAFSA, will ASU give me additional aids like work study or grants on top of the $17k scholarship that they are giving me? Thanks.

No.

You don’t have need (because of your scholarship)

Your “need” was $17k…you have a scholarship for that.

They aren’t going to give you grants or w/s to reduce your EFC. That is your family’s responsibility.

Thanks to everyone, especially the 2 moms. Moms know best!!! Merry Xmas.

congrats on the scholarships. :)

Didn’t you get some scholarships to other schools, too?

Is the problem that your parents can’t pay their EFC? how much can they pay each year towards your education?

And, Merry Christmas to you, too! :)

Good memory Mom. I got full ride to Bama, almost full tuitions to OSU & UCF. But, ASU’s Barrett is my 1st choice, it’s close to home & has my major (Biotech). Because they are cutting back on scholarship this year ($17k instead of $23k), I need to find ways ($$) to justify going there. My parents want me to go to Bama, since I am planning to go to graduate or medical school.

So, do you think is worthwhile for me to even apply for FAFSA? Maybe it will help if I attend the UCs? Since it will be in state for me? Thanks again.

One thing to remember about the Barrett Honors program is that it requires a VERY high (I want to say 3.5…but I’m not sure about that) college grade point average to maintain that scholarship. I have no personal experience with the school but there have been kids on here (and parents of kids) who have LOST that scholarship because their GPA didn’t meet that bar.

Just a thought…for the future.

You can file a FAFSA, so that you can get an unsub loan if you want it.

Did you apply to the Honors College at Bama? Did you apply to their Computer-Based Honors Program (it’s one of their 4 honors programs). It is a very smart group of kids. The avg ACT of its members is 33. Only 40 students are accepted to CBHP.

It isn’t a computer science program; it’s a research honors program. You do research with a prof in your choice of discipline.

The deadline to apply is Jan 5th. The app is online on MyBama - Academics Tab - down the left side column. It’s an all-in-one app for the other honors programs as well.

I have a son in CBHP, so if you have any questions, let me know.

*Maybe it will help if I attend the UCs? Since it will be in state for me? Thanks again. *

Since I don’t live in Calif anymore, I’m not sure what they’re currently doing for aid for those who earn more than $60/70k (can’t remember the new threshold). For those who earn less than the threshold, they get free tuition in grants and scholarships. However, others on this board (who earn more than that) have complained that their in-state FA packages were just loans. I don’t know what the UCs are doing about the costs for Room and Board for those who earn less than the threshold or for those whose EFCs are below the COA.

Thumper1 thanks for the pointer, I hear you. To gradaute from Barrett and renewal of scholarship is 3.25.

Mom, I applied to the Fellowship and will be submitting my application to CBHP by next week. Maybe getting into one of these programs will make going to Bama attractive. My parents really want me to go to Bama, I am just concern that it doesn’t have the major I want Biotechnology, I have to settle for Microbiology if I attend Bama.

^^^

I always advise any kids who have merit scholarships to be careful to balance “easier” and “harder” classes each semester so as to not fall below the req’d GPA.

Also, it’s a good idea for any first time freshman to take a lighter load his/her first semester. There are a lot of distractions and adjustments that first semester. It’s amazing how many kids get themselves into GPA trouble their very first semester because they took 3 sciences with labs, some hard Cal class, and a new foreign language. Yikes!!!

Be nice to yourself, take an interesting, but light, Gen Ed class or two your first semester! :)

* I am just concern that it doesn’t have the major I want Biotechnology, I have to settle for Microbiology if I attend Bama.*

Ok…I’m dumb…what is biotechnology? lol

What department is that in? Bio? Engineering?

I have a son who’s pre-med at Bama, and he’s a double major of Chem Engineering and Biology.

Would you get a lot of AP Credits at Bama? Both my sons were able to start with 41 credits - which makes having a double major or some minors much easier.

Yes Mom, thanks for the great advice. If everything goes well, I should have about 43 AP transfer credits, might not have too many GE classes that I need to fullfill?

I just googled and found this explanation on wikipedia…is this right?

Biotechnology draws on the pure biological sciences (genetics, microbiology, animal cell culture, molecular biology, biochemistry, embryology, cell biology) and in many instances is also dependent on knowledge and methods from outside the sphere of biology (chemical engineering, bioprocess engineering, information technology, biorobotics).

You probably will have a Fine Arts req’t, and possibly a Literature req’t. A lot will depend on which AP classes you took and your scores. If you didn’t take AP Gov, you probably will have a SB requirement (SB = Social Behavior or something like that. lol ) If you get into CBHP, then that will take care of any CS requirement.

If you like to write, and your AP English score covers your Fresh Comp req’ts, then you might enjoy taking one of the req’d 300 level W classes. But, don’t take your first semester unless you love writing. The Honors College offers several VERY FUN writing classes with the upper level W designation.

Exactly!! ASU has the Biodesign Institute that has research in this area. It is a popular major in the west coast. UCSD & UC Davis are fairly well known for it.

Thanks for the tips. I’ll definitely keep these classes in mind.
