Scholarship Finalist

My child just got a letter in the mail telling him that he is a Levine Scholarship Finalist. We are currently making arrangements to go to UNCC for the dinner reception, college tour and interview. There are 15 scholarships awarded out of a group of 43 finalists. It's a relatively new scholarship and it's a full ride. How does this process work re the interview etc. Can anyone pass on some helpful tips? Thanks in advance.

Which school is this?

If the scholarship is rather new, there may not be many here that are familiar with it.

Congratulations! I don’t know anything about the Levine, but I read the website, and it sounds a little like the Morehead at UNC. Although parents do not attend with the student finalist weekend. The best advice is for your student to be themselves, be prepared to talk about their application, resume, essays. The student should demonstrate the passion and skills that have gotten them to this point. UNC brings in about 120 kids, and awards about 60. You can have your student do a practice interview or two with a counselor or friend, just to become comfortable with the process. At UNC, there were two interviews … each with about 3 to 4 people on the search committee. First cut was on paper only. Second cut, phone interview, third was finalist weekend. In state candidates have another hoop of in-state regional interviews. Former scholars hosted the candidates, took them out, to dinner, picked them up at airport, etc. I know at UNC, they are looking for confident and smart kids, but not arrogant kids … past threads have indicated that kids who were “too full of themselves” may have been cut. Hope that helps. Good luck!

Matermia,

The Morehead is 3 stages for all:

In State - Paper -> Regional Interview -> Finalist weekend

OOS - Paper -> Phone Interview -> Finalist weekend

Yes, it looks like the Levine Scholarship is UNCC’s flagship scholarship. Best wishes to the OP’s child.

Well I guess the hoop - is that the in state kids have to do an face-to-face - rather than a phone interview …

I just got my finalist letter in the mail, i dont really know what to expect but its a good opportunity, good luck.

Hi everyone, my name is KT and I’m a senior at JEB Stuart HS in VA. I’m applying for this scholarship but I would like to know if I have a good chance at getting it?

Are there any Levine Scholars on this thread that are able to share some insight or shed some light on what can be expected during the Levine Scholarship Interview Day on February 9th, 2014?
