Scholarship for debate

son is a 31/1350 looking at 2/3 tuition.
son is also a state champion public forum debater who has competed successfully on the national level and since UA has a very good debate team I was wondering if anyone knew if additional scholarships were avaiable for debaters

What will be your son’s major? Many additional scholarships are available by department.

For instance, if your son was going to major in engineering or computer science, with his stats, he’d get full tuition plus an additional $2500. With other majors, he might get some or no additional amount.

I’ll look to see if there are any scholarships unique to the debate team. I suspect that IF there are, they would be given to those who have become members of the debate team. Has your son been recruited to join the debate team? If not, he should contact -

What state are you from? :)

Alabama High School Forensics League Scholarships
The Director of Forensics awards 20 scholarships, which cover in-state tuition for students interested in participating in the Alabama Forensics Council competitive program of individual events and debate. Available to students in any University division.

^^^

But I think the OP is OOS (based on the 2/3 expectation for a 31ACT).

That scholarship looks like it’s for students who graduate from Alabama High schools and are in the League.

I think it that the scholarships only pays the value of in-state tuition. It a is scholarship to join the debate team (the Alabama Forensics Council).

we are from new york and will contact the director of forensics as suggested. if they give the value of in state I wonder if that could be used on top of the 2/3 oos he would receive based on stats

thanks

doubtful. if they give the value of in-state it would most likely replace the 2/3 amount.

Mike, I’m not sure what you mean…
2/3 scholarship (about $12k per year) is larger than in-state scholarship (about $7k per year).

In the state of Alabama, an OOS student can’t be awarded a scholarship that states that it is giving in-state rates to an OOS student (like some states do). UA goes around that rule by giving scholarships that reduces the OOS rate.

So, if an OOS student has a 2/3 tuition scholarship, you’d have to find out if the Debate scholarships can be awarded as an “amount” that could be put towards that remaining 1/3 tuition.

I am fairly sure it is just a flat 3k scholarship. Regardless, there is a form for it online. Your son should know that the UA does not compete in debate events, only I.E.'s.

What are I.E.'s?

Is that Individual Events?

So, does that mean that UA debate team students compete as individuals but not as a paneled team (or whatever you call it).

UA does policy debate.

[Policy debate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Policy debate - Wikipedia)

Sirbumpy,

do you know where we could find the form online. we were also led to believe that UA competes in parli. Do you know which events the team competes in?

The change is recent, I know for a fact that they do not do policy and I am fairly sure that they do not do parli anymore. The application should be on their website.

b216…

I would contact Dr. Thompson for the latest info (contact info below). Sometimes we don’t know the latest info here.

Only he would know what the debate team will be doing over the next 4 years. What they’re currently doing (or not doing) isn’t as relevant as what they will be doing.
