I know in 2016 they got rid of the full-tuition scholarship for NMS students but do they still offer a merit scholarship package to NMS students. I know Northeastern used to do the same thing and now their scholarship is about 3/4 of tuition. Should I have any hope of getting a scholarship package from UT for OOS?
UT’s tuition for obviously very high (but literally every top public school has ivy league cost for OOS). Another question I have is if the admissions process for OOS is much more difficult than in-state. I remember reading that only about 10% of students are OOS, meaning it is very competitive. Also, does UT care much about rank for OOS. My school doesn’t rank but I have high test scores and GPA, which will give me a leg up bc I come from a school that had 35 National Merit Semifinalists last year. Also, could anyone comment about if the BHP is extremely competitive for OOS and if its benefits are worth choosing it over somewhere like UMich without an honors program.
Hey! We are in-state but yes it is very competitive for out of state and for Texas students who are outside the top 6 percent.
There are several places you can find the admission formulas for admission. I’m not sure how they do it for out of state students but for Texas students, admissions assigns a rank to you based on some factors, if you come from a non-ranking school.
Just do a quick search online and you can find a lot of information on the AI (academic index) and lots of UT specifics related to admissions.
UT is very stingy with merit aid. I would not count on getting any merit money from UT. Almost every scholarship has a need based component. There are a couple that are merit only, but they are ultra-competitive. (I’m not trying to discourage you but if you need merit money to attend, UT is definitely a reach.) Best wishes to you on wherever you go!
UT doesn’t have scholarships for NMS. It does offer some ultra competitive full tuition scholarships and full rides, most of which are awarded to in-state applicants. Getting in as an OOS student will also be extremely difficult.
They have a (literal) handful of OOS tuition waivers for recipients of UT merit scholarships. My D18 was fortunate enough to be offered one but she was not applying for an academically competitive subject (she was an audition based ballet BFA admit with 4.0UW/35 ACT). She didn’t attend (she got a full ride at a college with a better ballet program).
I inquired about an OOS tuition waiver for my son, who was accepted into biomedical engineering a few years ago. He had pretty decent stats. The lady politely laughed at me. She said they had only a handful of waivers for the entire college of engineering, all four years.
Thanks for all the help. It’s very difficult to decide between scholarships or a better program, but I don’t think I’ll count on attending UT when USC offers half tuition and U Florida offers a full ride…
Honestly I think you’re on the right track! UT is very affordable if you are in state but if you are OOS and have a better financial offer elsewhere, I would take it.
