Scholarship for student with disabillities

My son is a senior in high school planning on attending the local community college in our town. I am trying to help him search for scholarships. He has carried a coding of autism throughout school though diagnosed through Kennedy Krieger Institute as having Speech and Language Disorders. Although he maintains a GPA of 3.7, he struggles academically. He has never done well on standardized tests and therefore has not taken the SAT as it is not required for admission into the college he is planning to attend. He is currently participating in a culinary arts program through the technical center in his school district. He does well with sports, Cross Country Running and Swimming and has recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Any information on scholarships that he may qualify for would be appreciated.

You should have him register on FastWeb and see what is out there. Also take a look at what is available through member boards that address his issues. My son got a cancer survivor scholarship that was brought up on some parent board for those whose kids went through the ordeal. It was the only scholarship he got. The rest just didn’t pan out. It’s not an easy go in terms of getting any money, I want to warn you.

In our state, the dept of vocational rehabilitation will sometimes fund community college programs for young adults with disabilities. The person would need to apply for services through the dept.
Maybe there is something similar in your state?

I would also recommend the vocational rehabilitation dept.

Also check to see if there are any foundations that might offer scholarships.

Another vote for checking with voc rehab. It’s a federal program but each state uses funds as they see fit, so the benefits for post-secondary education do vary.
