Are there scholarships that I can write about my recent volunteer activity??

Sure, many scholarships will want you to write about volunteer work in your application. In addition, many collees that give scholarships have special ones for students who do a lot of volunteer work and are community leaders that way.

i was hoping to find out about specific ones

It probably would depend on your community service.
You can also get a stipend and an education voucher to apply towards tuition or loans after a year of service with CityYear or Americorps.

I’m familiar with a couple that specific colleges give out. Notre Dame gives out the Hesburgh Yusko scholarship. You have to be an excellent student, but I believe the two main qualifications are community service and leadership (usually one in the same, like having started a non-profit). That’s a competitive one - I know a couple of outstanding candidates who tried for that one but didn’t get it. LaSalle University in Philadelphia gives half tuition scholarships for service - I know somebody who got that one for an Eagle Project and for volunteering at a nursing home. And I know an OOS student who is attending The College of NJ who is receiving 10k per year. The mother told me the student’s stats were only average for the school, but that the school based its merit on the large amount of community service.

Check some local organizations in your area. Definitely check the individual colleges in which you’re interested. My guess is those with some religious affiliation may be more inclined to have a community service scholarship (but you never know like with TCNJ). Good luck!

THank you guys for replying, and I totally neglected to clarify what exactly it is I’m trying to do. I’m already at a university, will be a sophomore this coming fall. I’ve been traveling this summer to poor foreign countries and participating in volunteer camps, and I was hoping there were a few outside scholarships (which I would be able to apply to any school) which would score heavily on community service so I can write about my experiences.

There are, but they’re usually offered by or through the organization you did the volunteer work for. For example, The American Red Cross offers scholarships to current undergraduates who did recent volunteer work for them. I would start with the organizers for those volunteer camps. They could probably point you in the right direction.

Here is a big list
