Scholarship from Pittsburgh?

Hey guys,

I am a senior at a pretty prestigious high school in NY. I was admitted to the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering and Honors College about a month ago. I plan to pursue Bioengineering. I have been really anxious to hear if i would be receiving any merit scholarship but i haven't gotten anything yet.

My scores:

GPA: 94.42
SAT: 1450 out of 1600
Math II subject test: 800 out of 800
Chemistry subject test: 750 out of 800

I also have a copious amount of out of school work and job experience. I was wondering if i am eligible for any serious merit aid, as it would be extremely helpful financially for my family. Sort of banking on some help.
I would really appreciate some feedback and will post back!!
Thanks

IDK but did you also apply to Temple? You have the stats for their full tuition + stipend Pres scholarship. http://admissions.temple.edu/sites/admissions/files/uploads/188_1213_scholarship_info_sheet_FINAL.pdf

I will look into Temple. Thank you OHMomof2!!

You may still have a chance with scholarship money. As for serious money, I had received the Full Tuition, with an invitation to apply for the Chancellors (full ride), and I know the date that scholarship closed was on January 15th. But my friend just received $15,000 in the mail yesterday. There is still a chance for very good money.

Chancellor’s invites were done in waves in the past - so your 1/15 deadline might not be the last one.

The high GPA + SAT are definitely good (plus auto-eligibility into UHC helps). However, someone else recently called the Admissions committee and said they are

A) becoming limited in scholarship money because of budget cuts
B) having a harder time picking students because the quality of the average applicant keeps increasing

They specifically said that SSOE students in general were being judged a bit harsher. In the past where being ranked top 5% of the class would have been enough for money, they’re now pushing for the top 1-2%.

Just some things to keep in mind as you wait for a scholarship letter to (hopefully) arrive

Look at some older thread on the Pitt board about what scholarship winners had last year in the way of stats. It’s getting tough to get accepted to Pitt these days, much less any of the awards. when 15 or so years ago a 1350 2 part SAT had you in the running for the CHancellor’s award and auto honors college. Good luck. I’ts a great school.

my kid has similar stats on GPA and identical SAT (although he did not take SAT subject tests). Still waiting…liberal arts degree for him. i think another thread indicated it’s particularly hard for engineering students this year. not to discourage you. just want to be blunt, the most recent thing I saw was around 10K to15K for OOS students, many of whom had higher stats than what u 2 have. My best guess and it is only a guess is that 10K is highest you would get. and yes, your SAT is high enough for full tuition at Temple. they run their own GPA and I think it’s 3.75 for full tuition so that looks good too. Still, a lot to be said for studying bioengineering at Pitt. My guess is you’re super strong in math and reasonably strong in critical reading, if so, your scores are the inverse of his and his astronomical CR score(with similar ACT stats) does not seem to have made Pitt blink yet. check out the last 2 to 3 pages of the scholarship questions thread to see more details and stats for kids who just got scholarship letters a few days ago. and with u being in NY, do you have any good options up there.

I think 10K-15K, but most probably 10K. School getting too competitive this year. Hope you have heard by now.
good Luck…

have a 91 gpa and a 1470/1600 (2200) got 10k if that helps for reference. not as much as i was hoping so pitt is most likely no longer an option but its nice none the less

Got the letter on Thursday. Had applied via Prestige application to apply by the deadline, Jan. 15th (so did not send recommendations or essay etc.) CR&M = 1540; Very rigorous HS program, 3.5 GPA going into Sr. year (but dropped under 3.5 this first semester). Congrats letter stated 5K scholarship. hth for references
