Scholarship Funds

What is the point of receiving scholarship money for those who qualify for financial aid if they subtract the financial aid offered if one receives scholarship funds?

I didn’t apply for outside scholarships last year because I thought the same thing you did. I then found out that when they say they’ll deduct from your financial aid package, they’re including loans and work-study as well. They take away from those two first before anything else.

@External: anneexp is correct. It reduces your debt after graduation.

Your financial aid is deducted in this order: unmet need, unsubsidized loans, subsidized loans/work-study, UC grants, state/federal grants.

Keep in mind that Berkeley will find out about scholarships that is paid directly to the campus, but if you receive scholarship money directly (the check came to you directly), then it’s your responsibility to report it (and not everyone is responsible).

Are we required to do so if we receive the checks? If people don’t do it, would there be any consequences?

“Required” is a debatable word. How will the college enforce such rule?
