My s has 30 ACT but GPA is 3.4. HS will not weight or recalculate. Low GPA due to illness and missing 2 months school as a junior. Any chance for a scholarship? Advice on how to obtain one? Wants to go to UA to be part of New College. He is out of state resident.

Has he applied yet? The priority deadline for scholarships was Dec 1st.

I spoke to Scholarships yesterday, and they said that they are taking down the scholarship app in about 2 weeks because they are soon maxing out.

At this point there are no guarantees for scholarship. Apply to the school NOW (don’t wait for son to get home from school), get your followup email, then immediately apply for scholarships before the link is removed.

UA typically considers all students with high scores with GPA’s over 3.0, but since you’ve missed the Dec 1st deadline, it’s unknown what he’d get.

BTW…New College at UA is a really cool thing. :)

I just wanted to add…

If UA ends up giving your son a scholarship, he may not be notified of it until March or so. Since he missed the Dec 1st deadline, sometimes UA waits to see who declines the school and then sends scholarships out to desirable students who missed deadlines or missed cut-offs. I can almost bet that you son won’t immediately be told of a scholarship award. If he gets one, he’ll likely learn of it later. Last year, my friend’s son got his award in April.

He applied and was accepted about a month ago but no invitation to Capstone Scholars. Completed scholarship applicaiton and no word from that. Wondering if there is an action step to help him out with dollars. Qualified for UHP - problem is no money and other state schools offering $$ but likes UA

M2CK -

Do you think it is too late to apply for UA scholarships? Our son did not apply and now thinks maybe he should have???

Thoughts?

When I talked with the undergraduate admissions office the representatives were extremely rigid. That being said, the application is very easy to fill out, not even an essay involved. Could be done in minutes and no harm in applying.l

CACOVA…what are your son’s stats?

When I spoke with admission, they were rigid. But, when I spoke to the Scholarships office, they left open the possibility (no guarantees). I would apply NOW, just in case. What are your son’s stats?

Tdoc…are you saying that you applied for scholarships before the Dec 1st deadline? If so, your son will VERY likely get a scholarship. He may not learn about it until spring, because his GPA is a bit short. UA often does that when someone “almost makes” the cut-offs. I was told that every student with high test scores that also has a 3.0 GPA is considered for scholarships.

In the meantime, I would again ask the high school to at least write down a weighted GPA on his transcript and resend. All UA asks is for the weighted GPA to be written on the transcript. It can be handwritten by the GC and signed. You could do the figuring yourself, provide them with the calculations, and ask them to just write that down and resend. I would then contact Scholarships and tell them that the school was resending transcript because of a necessary correction. LOL

I can’t believe a school would be so rigid when this is only for scholarship consideration. I would have my H there for the request. I would stand firm on this.

He applied and was accepted about a month ago but no invitation to Capstone Scholars.

I would call or email the Admissions office and ask why your son hasn’t received an invite to CSDay (mention his stats). UA seems to send the invites in “batches.” But, just to make sure that your child wasn’t accidentally left off the list, I would contact and ask.

M2TK -

Son’s stats - 3.9 GPA (weighted - I know UA takes what you give them)

SAT’s CR 800, M 770, R 660
AP’s - Calc AB, Calc, BC, English, Computer Science, Stats, something else I can’t remember…

Goes to Science/Tech school in Northern Virginia…(yes, that school…) which. I think was part of the problem, as there is enormous pressure to go to the “elite” schools. As related in other posts, when I suggested that UA would be good, he dismissed the thought…and now regrets not applying…

Apply to the school NOW, then get that follow-up email, and then IMMEDIATELY apply for scholarships.

Don’t wait til your son comes home from school. Get that app in!

^^^

I don’t know what UA is going to do with his app for scholarships. His stats are outstanding. They may offer him the scholarship anyway (even though he’s missed the deadline).

Have him also apply to CBHP. That is another way to get the full tuition scholarship past the deadline!!!

Since the CBHP deadline is Jan 5th, and you can’t apply til you’re accepted, you need to act now. There’s possibly a way around waiting for the acceptance; Call Jane Batson at CBHP and ask.

Thanks M2CK… So, the CBHP haas a later deadline? Did not realize that - thought all was Dec. 1.

I will take all of this information back to the kitchen where my wife and I will powwow…

I am trying to use the “Chat Now” feature with the scholarship office at UA - but cannot get through…

“Chat now” with Scholarships has been off since last week. Don’t bother chatting with Admissions because they only know to give the flat “it’s too late answer.” (which isn’t necessarily true.)

CBHP has its own money to offer tuition scholarships. If your child is admitted to CBHP (computer-based honors program), they will likely give him a scholarship offer. That deadline to apply to CBHP is Jan 5th.

The way it works is this…most CBHers already have scholarships from NMF or Presidential, but there typically are a few (like your son) who either missed the deadline or missed the stats cut-off, therefore they are offered scholarships right from CBHP.

BTW…did your son change his mind after Saturday’s football game? LOL Believe me, I’m hearing that a lot of minds changed after that. :)

more info about CBHP and the Honors College… Typically, you can’t apply until after accpetance, but since deadlines are approaching, some work-arounds are usually possible.

The Honors College’s 4 different programs & app process.

It’s understandable that there’s been some confusion about applying to The Honors College since some colleges don’t require a sep app.

Dr. Shane Sharpe (super nice) is the interim dean of the Honors College. He’s also the director of CBHP. Dr. Sharpe has his PhD in MIS, but he’s also a pharmacist.

[Honors College - University Honors](http://honors.cbhp.ua.edu/index.php?page=uhp) website

[Honors College - Apply](http://honors.cbhp.ua.edu/index.php?page=apply) application instructions

The Honors College - Consists of 4 different programs - 2 programs admit by stats, the other 2 programs are very competitive.

**University Honors Program/B and International Honors Program (IHP) - applying students are admitted if they have the stats - Incoming students with a 28 ACT or 1250 SAT will be automatically accepted to the Honors College upon submission of their applications. Students will be notified of their acceptance via mail.

A qualified student can belong to more than one program, but to become a member of Computer-Based Honors Program (CBHP) or Fellows, a student must be selected through an essay and interview process (held in Feb - UA usually pays all expenses - transportation, hotel, food. I hope UA still does this…anyone know?).

**University Honors Program/B - minimum ACT 28 (SAT 1250 M + CR) - UHP classes are limited to 15 students. UHP students have their own computer labs. EZ app - one paragraph essay about yourself. NO BIG DEAL at all! If you have the stats, you’re admitted after app received.

**International Honors Program/B - minimum ACT 28 - IHP classes are limited to 15 students. IHP students must also focus on a foreign language and do a study-abroad. If you have the stats, you’re admitted after app received.

**Computer-Based Honors Program /B - only 40 students admitted to CBHP - average ACT 33 (typically includes a couple of “hook” students with ACT 28 - 30, but the others range ACT 31-36). The students’ majors range from Engineering to Liberal Arts to Pre-Med to Dance/Theatre to Library Science (and everything in between). Project-oriented research with a prof - fabulous presentations (I’ve been able to sit-in several students’ presentations of their individual research projects.) CBHP is a minor. CBHP students have their own lab facilities.

University Fellows Experience - (UFE or “Fellows”) only 40 students admitted to program - average ACT 33 (I think that’s the average that we were told., but includes kids within the ACT 28 - 36 range.) Project-oriented program. Must be invited to apply. Apps are sent to students with ACT 32+. If your ACT is between 28-31, you can have a GC request an invite.

Students interested in CBHP and/or Fellows, must also apply to UHP first.

The students in the Honors College are kids who score above the 90 percentile. Most of the kids in the CBHP and Fellows Program score in the 99 percentile.

Plus, various department majors have some honors classes. To take such classes, a student must be a member of UHP, too.

Last year, Dr. Halli (the recently retired dean of the honors college) told us that over 20% of the incoming freshmen are now qualified for The Honors College. Therefore, he was concerned that Dr. Witt (the president) would insist that the minimum ACT be raised, since honors classes cost a lot more money (smaller classes). But, Dr. Witt said that UA would keep the 28 ACT minimum because the students were doing so well in those classes.

Belonging to the Honors College has its perks…small college feel, smaller class sizes, priority registration, honors housing, honors computer lab.

MTCC Thanks for the hopeful advice. My son did apply on time for the scholarship. HS is rigid about not changing GPA even though UA suggested different weighting. Really unbelievable. He has applied for Blount and New College - primary reason that it will be such a disappointment if scholarship dollars do not come through. Guess we will just have to be patient. Thanks for insights.

^^^^

Is this a public school?

A few years ago, my kids’ Catholic High school wasn’t weighing either, but parents started really making a stink when their kids’s college opportunities were being hurt by the policy. Then they tried to drag their feet “investigating” how to do it, until I embarrassed them at a huge meeting and pointed out that when I was on the school board we didn’t take that long to interview applicants and hire the current principal. Within a week there was a policy. LOL (I can be a real smart a** when I need to be.)

Sometimes I think high schools forget the purpose of their existence.

Thanks. It is a private school. Just took my daughter out of the school for issues similiar to this and she will be a NMS. That will show them (or not).

^^^

Oh yes. Typically private schools don’t like losing potential NMF’s I would make sure the school board knew exactly why I was removing that smart child.

Mom - does this mean that that you can not apply if you have only taken SAT and not the ACT? Thanks.

UA takes either the ACT or the SAT.

I always recommend that kids take BOTH tests because many kids do significantly better on one or that other. Scholarships are based on whichever is the top score.

For instance, some kids will get a 32 ACT (which merits the Presidential), but won’t get the 1400 (M+CR) SAT. Or, they’ll get a 1400+ on the SAT, but only a 30 on the ACT. So, it’s best to take both.
