I'm a current senior going into the University of Michigan, I was wondering if anyone can give me resources to find scholarships... I need some to tackle all of this OOS tuition! Thanks ahead!

*
I am a prospective freshman from New York. The tuition is a lot for me But came up with the idea of buying property in michigan (Since my cousin lives there… probably make the name of her house under my dads?) will that work in getting me the instate tuition rates?*

???

How were you planning on paying for UMich?

How much will your parents pay?

I see that you want to get into Ross.

There are very few options for scholarships at this point. Deadlines have passed, private scholarships are often small and only for freshman year, so paying for the other years is unlikely.

Where else were you accepted?

Parthp, no, really. Where are you planning to go to college?

*Income: Low income (2 older sisters in medical school – if that helps in any way)

MY SAT score is 1910 560CR, 680M, 570W*

This is crazy. If you’re low income, why have you decided on UMich? Where would you ever get the money to attend? This sounds like some kind of fantasy where you think somehow money is going to drop from the sky. UMich costs fifty thousand a year for an OOS student.

I don’t get this. Kids say, “I’m going to X school” when they have no means to pay for it.

Thanks guys! Does anyone else have any advice?

Check locally. Most big, national scholarships are gone. Check with your guidance office, your church, local civic organizations, etc.

And try to get a job this summer.

You have around $31k in grants from UMich (which is amazing, BTW), you have nearly full Pell, so that doesn’t sound like your parents could afford to pay towards college.

You have $6500 in loans and $3,000 in work study, and it doesn’t sound like you want to take the work-study (which is to pay for day to day expenses/travel).

With grants and loans you have about $37k… You need about $48k for basic costs (tuition, fees, room and board). You’re going to need at least another $2k for personal expenses and travel…about $50k total (for lower division).

So, you still need about $13k per year (at least).

Do your parents own a business?

parthp…Make sure to consider an increase in tuition each year into your planning, since it’s almost certain to happen. Also, remember that UMich has a two-tiered tuition scale, so once you reach junior status (based on credits, not necessarily your third year) your per hour tuition rate will increase and your overall cost will go up a fair bit (probably around $1K or so) more per year. Keep all those factors in mind when you make your final decision. Good Luck!!

Yes…junior and senior year rates are about $3k higher per year. I don’t know if there is an additional upcharge for Ross, but there may be.

I would also ask if that grant will stay all four years.

Did your family include your med school sisters on your FAFSA as being in school?

I am an interview away for a business internship over the summer, and it will be paid.

I did never look into the work-study program, I always thought it to be stressful since I NEED my GPA to be SUPERB for Ross admissions, as well as be committed to multiple EC’s (clubs, business fraternity, etc.). How many hours is the work-study per week? Will I be able to balance school work, workstudy, as well as social life at UMich?

I want for my parents not to pay for any of my expenses, if so, very little. Is it possible for me to get a loan for 13+K a year to tackle ALL of my expected expenses? Which loans (besides govt loans, which I plan on taking already) should I apply to that have the lowest interest rates )

Anything else?

BTW, thanks A LOT for your feedback, I am truly grateful!

You can’t get a 13K loan. You’re limited to 5.5K as a freshman. A Stafford loan is all You as an individual can qualify for. Your parents might be able to cosign for the remainder but since you qualify for a Pell I would not ask them to do that.

look into a lot of scholarships! There are still a few open for rising college freshmen.
