Scholarship Information Email received yesterday.

S got an email from UTK yesterday saying thank you for your scholarship essay. Over 6,000 applications were filed for scholarships. Chancellor Scholarships winners will be notified in late January. They will start notifying Institutional Scholarship winners in December. General, Departmental and College Scholarship winners will be notified in late Feb or March.

Geez, this waiting is murder. Everyone really wants S to go to UTK, but Bama has guaranteed him a full out-of-state tuition even before he applied. The lottery scholarship doesn't even come close to touching the in-state UTK tuition.

Here is hoping that he gets a good offer from UTK.

I am new to CC. In fact, this is my first post. I really want to go to UTK. My brother is a junior there now. I was glad to read your post. I was not sure how scholarships worked there. I guess I am still not exactly sure. My brother got several scholarships. I thought the lottery scholarship helped a lot. I am not sure what the ACT requirements are for those and any other scholarships offered through the university.

I am just now planning for college, starting to take my ACT, etc. and was just wondering if you had any suggestions since your son is going through this process.

Thanks!

Which year of school are you in, Soph, Jun or Senior. This will help me answer your questions.

As described in the prior post, there are multiple types of scholarships.

Your GPA will be recalculated by both the State for the Lottery Scholarship and by UT for thier scholarships. Both have instructions on thier website as to how to recalculate. UT will give you extra points for Honors and AP classes.

TSAC SCHOLARSHIPS
Lottery Hope Scholarship - GPA 3.0 and ACT 21 (Guarenteed if you meet requirements)
Lottery General Assembly Scholarship - GPA 3.75 and ACT 29 (Guarenteed if you meet requirements)
Ned McWherter Scholarship - GPA 3.5 and ACT 29 + outstanding extra curricular activities (competitive - not guarenteed)
Be sure to check [Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation](http://www.tn.gov/collegepays/mon_college/scholarships.htm) to see if you qualify for other TSAC scholarships

UTK [The University of Tennessee: Types of Financial Aid - Scholarships](<a href=“About Financial Aid - One Stop Student Services”>About Financial Aid - One Stop Student Services) None are guarenteed.

Department/Colleges Scholarships - awarded based on the college/department you choose at UT. Call your intended school for details.

Institutional Scholarhips
Volunteer Scholarship - “Core GPA range of 3.65 to 4.0 and an ACT range of 32-36.” - $3000
University Scholarship - “Core GPA range of 3.5 to 4.0 and an ACT range of 27-31.” - $1,500
If you are admitted to the Honors College, then the Volunteer or University Scholarship will be increaded by $1,000.

Chancellor Scholarships - Many individual ones that range from $5,000 to $8,000 - highly competive - website indicates most people awarded these have at least a 32 ACT and 4.0 GPA.

To be considered for All Scholarships, you must submit your application and scholarship application no later than Dec 1 of your senior year. I believe you can apply for department and institutional scholarships later, but I think it is like a 2nd round award and your odds may or may not be as great. (Don’t quote me on that, but that is what I understood)

Based on this year’s requirements, you will need to write one “personal statement” for admission to UT (new requirement) and you will need to write another essay for your scholarship application. You will also need two letters of recommendation.

In addition to the Scholarships - there is the Haslam Scholars Program - a very very competitive program, but it is a full ride. You can nominate yourself or someone else can nominate you. I believe that in addition to impecable scores you will need alot of service to community.

Also sign up for a couple of scholarship websites - IF THEY ASK FOR MONEY THEY ARE A SCAM. We have applied for other scholarship based on information from these websites. Some are need based, others are merit based, and some are based on a totally unique set of circumstances. An instance of a strange one is the Contest for the best Prom dress made out of Duct Tape.

I hope this deluge of information is helpful. I will be glad to answer any direct questions, please ask.

Also - do not take the ACT only once. UT superscores, so multiple attempts is to your benefit. S scored a 27 the first time. His current superscored ACT is 34.

GO VOLS.

Thanks so much for your thorough reply. I have not had a chance to get on my computer lately because of Christmas and having my entire family here. It has been a nice break.

I am a junior
.
But now I really need to get serious because I am taking the ACT for the first time in April. I have been studying a little bit, but I am hoping to take a full length practice test soon, to give me some idea of what kind of score I can expect.

It seems like that will be the most important consideration in many of the scholarships that you mentioned. Would dual-enrollment courses count as honors courses? I am not in a “super academic” path in school. I saw my brother go through it and I just didn’t feel like I wanted to be stressed out all the time like he was.

He did get a lot of scholarships, however, so I know it was worth it, but his ACT score was not great at all – in fact it went down a point the second time he took it.

He is doing great in college, however, making the Dean’s List every semester – just like in high school.

I have heard ot the Duct Tape prom dress. I actually sew all of my own clothes, so my mother told me about it. I have never gotten into design a whole lot, but I have seen some of those dresses and they are amazing. The might be a fun challenge over the summer.

Thanks again and GO VOLS!
