Scholarship Information

I got mine USC acceptance letter today, post marked 1/28. But on the Explore page, it just says like the above person, We are delighted you have interest... I guess I'm not up for a scholarship? :( Since I hopefully will be a NMF, I am guaranteed a half-tuition scholarship?

^You get a stressless Presidential Scholarship,ie the one that you don't have to do interview. A lot of my daughter friends did interview but did not get move to Trustee.

@freesia001 if your question is what i'm assuming to be would your scholarship go away after you've matriculated at USC, arrived on campus, and at that point switched majors; then:
No, your scholarship will follow you throughout your undergraduate career at USC no matter what you do (including study abroad! whoo London!), save should the unfortunate circumstance your GPA drop low enough and that whole mess of probation, etc.

what i'm less sure is what would happen if you switched majors right now and there's a thread i posted to dealing with that question, and as i said there, i think all that would change is which department interviews you.

from what i understand (and this is as an educated guess from a trustee scholar divining the nature of the system) the way you should think about it is that it's not necessarily one particular department is more selective of its scholarship than another (i.e. the college gives its scholarships to everyone while the engineering school is more selective) but that it reflects the school's "share" of the undergrad applications it gets (so the college has more scholarships than say the theatre school which simply doesn't have as many applicants), and the reason why the interviews are delegated to the specific schools are to offload the demand and because the schools are the most qualified to judge what an ideal applicant is.

the disclaimer is though i don't have any hard evidence to back the latter statement up. anyone back me up here? (or refute me....)

Has anyone who has been accepted received their scholarship letter in the mail yet?

arctic, when it comes to the college of liberal arts and sciences, there may be more leeway to change majors without it impacting scholarship decisions--I don't know. But I suspect changing Schools like Marshall, School of Cinematic Arts, Viterbi, Thornton, etc (and majors within those schools) right now--if you've been invited for an interview for Pres or Trustee, but before interviewing--might not be such a good idea. The department was the one who selected the candidate, so they must have seen something special there. At this point, the other colleges and schools may have finished selecting their candidates, so no more spots would be available in the new major. If you are interviewing at Marshall (for example) but tell them you have changed your mind about your major, they are likely to give the scholarship to someone else since they use the $$ to attract students to their department. Of course, on the flip side of the coin, it might be impossible to give a great interview if you no longer have a passion for the major, since you are interviewed by the heads of that department and their questions are pretty specific to the major. Hmm...

If you haven't yet heard from USC but are hoping to get a scholarship interview in the next wave, the same thinking would apply. Now is not a great time to tell them you don't want their specific major. My advice: remember why you loved your major (and I suspect you wrote a passionate essay aobut it and have many ecs to back it up).

Anyone else have a theory?

So just hang on and see. Many students decide to switch majors after they arrive on campus. There is plenty of time to think about it, try out a few courses, talk to the great academic advisers and see when you get there.

i received my scholarship information in the mail today. i was lucky enough to be a finalist for the Trustee scholarship

hey hotshot where do you live?

socal. about half an hour from usc campus

What were everyone's stats? I'm assuming you need like a 3.9+, 33 ACT, to have a shot at a scholly, right?

i received the Trustee scholarship letter today too (:
[i live in socal btw.]

hawaiiboy15- take a look at the Stats thread where many of these students have posted their stats.

Thanks cc411. Some pretty impressive kids in there.

wait so usc only sent acceptance letters to the finalist of presidential and trustee scholarships?
what about dean's scholarship?

^Next week would be for Dean's. This is based on last year cycle.

Hm. I was accepted, but I logged onto to the website according to the "trick" or whatever, and then clicked reserve under Explore USC and it said
"Congratulations on your admission to USC! We are delighted that you have an interest in visiting campus. Each Explore USC date has an attendance limit and reservations are granted on a first-come, first-served basis. You will not be able to select a session within 3 business days of its start date. To view a tentative schedule, please click here. The following sessions are still available:"

does that mean I'm not a scholarship candidate? =[[

juju same thing happened to me... maybe we are up for dean's??

I got my letter for the presidential scholarship today!

:D

only I know nothing about the process... how many do they award each year out of all the students who are finalists?

Also, if I'm a NMF, do I automatically get half tuition as well? What if I don't progress to F status from the SF status?

athenegoddess: i saw you said in another thread that you didn't find your scholarship infomation in the Explore USC Reserve page, right?
since i met the same problem and my package is still on its way, i guess there is still possibility that i have one of the major scholarships?

athenegoddess, I'll repost the numbers:

2008 class:

Trustees 128
Presidentials 332
Deans 117
NM 244 (I do not know whether the NMFs are included in the Pres number above, but I don't think so)

http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergr...file2008v3.pdf

If I remember correctly there were 150 places in each of 2 Explore sessions for Trustee. (Don't know how many in each of 3 Pres Explore sessions, but might be the same)
I think you can check the # of places on your Explore invitation info to see if numbers are the same this year.

I believe they offered the scholarships to between 50% and 75% of interviewees, so between 150 and 225 were offered the Trustee. Remember that a proportion of students who got it, do not matriculate and go elsewhere.
Trustee candidates can get the Pres instead, and sometimes a Pres can be bumped up to Trustee. Pres candidates can end up getting the Deans.

(If you are NMF, it would be to your advantage to interview anyway since there is always the chance you could be offered the Trustee instead.)

Last year, in my S's tiny major, they interviewed two admits (my S and one other) for the Trustee. My S was given Trustee and the other boy was awarded the Presidential. Both boys decided to attend USC. Of course, I'm not sure if there was always a limit of only 1 Trustee for that major--but if so, it looks like 50%. Heh. This is really way too small a sample (for those of you statistics whizzes, I can hear you laughing!)

My S was very serious about attending USC, and was thrilled at the opportunity to interview for Trustee, but I was surprised to see many of the kids at Explore who considered USC as a far back-up option, as they awaited acceptances to ivies, Stanford and the like. This is a pretty highly statted group, so it's not unusual to find many different levels of Trojan love (or not) among the crowd. Therefore, when they did award the top merit prizes last year (I think they offer about 200 Trustee in total), my eyes had been opened and I was less surprised (although still horrified-heh!!) that many turn down this amazing scholarship.

But really, people. How can you beat it??? LOL.
