Scholarship Information

i'm a NMSemifinalist (and will find out about NMF soon by school) but got a scholarship interview for Presidential. So, it does not make sense for me to interview for the Presidential when I can get the same money through NM. Correct? I heard that sometimes interviewees for presidential can get bumped up to Trustee (and vice versa) though, so what are your thoughts on interviewing with the chance of being bumped?

You should interview to keep all your options opened. I heard sometimes USC gives an extra $1000 on top of Presidential Scholarship for students who are NMF. Is this right?

i just got notified by USC today in the mail. i had a 35 ACT, good essays and recs, ranked 4/700+ 4.0 Gpa....im not sure whats going on i just need to get a schoalrship though. can i appeal lol?

did anyone get a call about the Norman Topping Scholarship?

Tuitionsaver, deathlyhollows and Columbia,
We were very confused about the NMF vs Presidential question at this time last year. Despite her initial reluctance, my daughter did attend the Explore session and she did the interview. She received the scholarship and then we were surprised and pleased when she was also awarded an additional $1000 per year for NMF. It turned out that $4000 was well worth the hassle. And she loves the school.

oh wow. thank you for clearing that up!

deathlyhollows,

I thought the Presidential scholarship was for 1/2 tuition? Why was she awarded $4000? I'm just trying to figure it all out.

Presidential is for half tuition. So I get like 17000 a year? something like that, i forget my mom deals with the finances :)

puzzled88,

Sorry, my question was for you instead of deathlyhollow. Why was your daughter awarded $4000 when presidential is 1/2 tuition (around $17,000)?

I think deathlyhollow meant that the daughter got 1/2 tuition plus $4000. $1000 per year.

Other parents (I think HImom, for one) posted that last year you could get the Presidential National Merit plus the additional $1k per year even without being invited to the Presidential interviews. No guaranty, obviously - I'm just passing on what I read on CC.

So for deathlyhollows, I'm not sure that's a factor in your decision whether to interview. But unless it's a huge hassle for you, it sounds like it would be a great way to see USC in some depth, and get to know a lot of your future classmates if you decide to attend. Plus there's that chance of getting bumped to Trustee.

guitars101 - Sorry if I was unclear. My daughter received half tuition (this year that was $17606) from the Presidential scholarship PLUS $1000 per year for NMF. The extra NMF credit of $500 per semester has been posted to her account several weeks after each semester has started. I have no idea if you can get the extra $1000 without being invited to the interviews. Perhaps someone else can answer that question.

has anyone that received a scholarhsip not been able to log into the site online to view their scholarship decision??

bump bump bump

D will receive the extra $1000 without the interview. It's part of the NMF award. She received the letter yesterday.

@ deathlyhollows, oh my goodness, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE go to the interview. yes there's a chance you'll get the trustee scholarship, but more importantly, you'll have fun! you get to stay overnight with one of the students in one of the dorms (or even Parkside), the Trojan Marching Band (i.e. ME!) will play for you, it's an absolutely GREAT experience, i don't know why on earth you would not go.

on top of everything, aren't they on school days? (i.e. more excused absence time)

very true (especially the missing school part)

it turns out i will be going march 3-5!!

caliboi, try to reserve for an exploreUSC event and see if it says anything about what you're interviewing for. also USC does not cover any part of your parent(s)'s airfare, but booking tickets through the STA does give them a somewhat cheaper ticket.

Is it possible for a student to take the Thematic Option and enroll in the Freshmen Science Hons Program?

Was I supposed to have gotten a Thematic Theme option in the mail? Im a trustee nominee and i did not get one. My stepbrother who is up for presidential did.
