Scholarship leverage

I just received notice from UMBC today about a merit-based scholarship that they are awarding me. As my first choice is College Park, will I be able to use UMBC's scholarship offer as leverage to earn more money in merit-based scholarship money from College Park? From the cursory search about scholarship leveraging that I made, leveraging depends on the similarity of schools in terms of ranking and other general information. UMBC and UMD seem to be fairly closely related in this regard, so I am hoping that this will yield results.

It depends, how much did UMBC offer you?
I know a friend who got a full scholarship to UMBC but only received $5,000/year from UMCP.

UMBC offered me $10,000 a year.

In comparison to UMBC and UMCP, UMCP has a much more competitive selection pool and although $10,000 seems like a lot for scholarship, UMCP is very hard on giving out scholarships, however it is a good chance to use as a leverage.

You have nothing to lose by trying.

At the same time, UMBC routinely gives out more scholarship money than UMCP and this will unfortunately work against you. UMBC is still thought of as “less desirable” by most (not all) high schoolers because it’s still shedding a rep for being a commuter campus and lots of people say it looks like an office park. One way UMBC has been rolling in better students is by trying to entice people away from UMCP with money. UMBC is kind of like UMCP’s ugly duckling younger sister who is smart but doesn’t have the same pizzaz and appeal.

BUT.

One thing you need to learn if you go to UMD (which I didn’t learn fast enough) is that if you’re gonna make something for yourself there you have to stand up for yourself. So you might as well start now ;).

Good luck…let us know how it goes…

Are you instate ? Would you please post your scores ?

Didn’t work for me. I had a full scholarship to UMBC but didn’t get anything for CP. I heard scholarships at CP are given out almost solely based on CR+Math SAT scores.
