Scholarship money for master's programs

Im appying to master's programs in the social sciences. How often is scholarship / grant money allocated to master's level students? How much, from your experience, is given?

I've been told by some that FAFSA is about all most master's level students get.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

blazingson,

It depends where you go. Most top schools don't really give much funding, because they have a bunch of qualified applicants, many of whom can pay the tuition fees.

thanks for the input. any master's level students get decent scholarships?

blazingson,

I know plenty of masters students who have received very good funding. Funding is guaranteed in the way that it is in most PhD programs, but many programs give funding to promising students who are beginning a masters program.

Your best bet is a research or graduate assistantship which provides a tuition scholarship and a living stipend. Contact your particular program concerning RAs at your school, and look up the school's research centers, and also considering becoming a hall director....

hopefully that helps

The Master's degree program I direct funds three teaching assistantships every year. They carry full tuition remission as well as a stipend.

Most Master's programs in my discipline do the same.

Now, vocationally-oriented Master's programs tend not to fund as well. (MSWs, etc.) But academically-oriented programs do.

I have been awarded a tuition scholarship covering 2/3 of my tuition at a great program (private)! The scholarship made it possible for me to attend.

Im hoping work study will make it even more affordable.

Thanks for the input

blazingson,

if you don't mind me asking, was the funding awarded to you with your admission or did you have to ask for or inquire about it?

The tuition scholarship was included in my admission packet. I personally have no qualms about being forthright with financial aid offices; if you've been admitted, I would call the aid office and ask about the status of your financial aid application. If you are polite and cordial, most staff would be glad to help.
