OK so I got the best financial aid package ever
my efc was 0 and the college i'm going to meets 100% need
in my specific case it met it without loans and without work study
ofcourse i could not be more thankful for that deal
the problem is that with an efc of 0 you can imagine i was worried about
how i was going to pay for college and applied to A LOT of scholarships
now i don't know what to do with the money
on one hand i want to deny the scholarships because i feel other people need
them more than me,
but on the other hand if i give the money to the school (no scholarship money is going to me) i feel i would be helping them out and thanking them for what they gave me
what should i do?

i say, give the money to me! jk.

for the little i know about scholarships and school budgets, i would deny the scholarship, because unless you know your school is going through financial difficulties (like my state’s university UMO), your school should have enough funds. but there are people out there who really need the scholarships.

ask the college you are going to. They may have specific rules about how this scenario is handled at their school

I agree with sue - ask the school. Also you could check to see if they can increase your COA to include the cost of a laptop for school so that part of the scholarship $$ can be used for that. I believe some schools may do that (I either read that here on CC or imagined it). Worth a try. The worst they can say is no.

^ Many schools do that - I know Princeton does for a fact.

Ask if you can defer the scholarship monies for use in your soph, jr, or sr year and buy a new laptop every year :D.

Or you could just hand over all of the money to me.

I’m guessing that you got a bunch of 1 year scholarships. If so, take the money, and save it for future years. Or, you can use it to buy a computer, and other one time expenses for a new student.

OperaDad, the OP is attending a school that covers the full COA including travel, personal and book expense. They’ll likely refund her up to that amount but reduce her need based grants for the remaining amount of the scholarships. IMO, refuse the scholarships (and thank them for the offer) and let someone with a less generous package be awarded them.

Ask if you can defer the scholarship to pay for graduate studies…just a possibility.
