I got my acceptance into the Musical Theatre program at PPU. I was wondering what amount people have been getting in “Artistic Scholarship” amounts. I got 12k a year, which apparently is near the top of the amount they will give. The school is still so expensive and I was hoping I could get more scholarship money because I have pretty good ACT scores. Anyone able to get more money? Love the program, not the price!

That is the amount I’ve been hearing most people got; between $10k-12k. However I know for a fact that some people didn’t receive a DIME in artistic money, so I’d be inclined to be somewhat thankful for even that amount!

JAGMINOR,

Congrats on your acceptance and large scholarship! You are right, PP is pricey, and they don’t have much to offer in the way of academic scholarships. D is a National Merit Scholar, and even sending in her letter from National Merit did not add to her academic award last year.

Did you complete and send in your FAFSA? If you are eligible for need-based aid, they might still be working on the financial aid package.

This may have been a one-time occurrence, but d was offered additional talent scholarship last summer (after she had committed to another school). The letter with the offer did not come until July (not helpful to those who need to make decisions now).

Maybe others will chime in with stories of being able to negotiate for more talent dollars or other aid, but I don’t think the school is able to add on to academic awards.

Good luck in your search, funding and selection!

We are in a similar situation. At this point we have not received Talent money nor did we receive Merit, although if if she wasn’t going into the conservatory she would be eligible for 10K of merit money. Would certainly make it a bit more affordable. Especially when she has received merit $ from most of the rest of the schools. Do you think you can negotiate for talent $. This is definitely towards the top of the list but definitely might have to reconsider due to funding.

Amen. In the same boat with many of you: acceptance for our daughter and nothing in Talent $. Waiting to see if anything changes with merit for grades. Agree that many schools in that price range offer some financial consideration. Although our daughter LOVED PP, we will have to evaluate based on other offers and final funding.

Glad to know we are not alone…Certainly doesn’t make the process any easier.

I’m a little unclear about academic awards/talent awards. For some reason, I thought the awards would be sent together. My D received $13,000 per year in Artistic Award but there was no mention of academic award. Are they sent separately? Or is there no academic award? Also, does anyone know the full anticipated cost of PPU for 2014-15 including room, board, and fees?

They told us $47,500.00! Ouch!

Ouch is right. Is that an in-state rate? Also I’m interested in hearing if there’s ever academic money given.

From the school’s website—Note: Students majoring in dance, theatre, cinema production, digital arts and screenwriting must be accepted both academically and artistically to be eligible for COPA scholarships. Total annual maximum of artistic achievement scholarship and dean’s academic scholarship is $14,000. Point Park is a private university so there is no instate rate.

Thanks @CTownMom. I wonder if that’s $14,000 total or if there’s $14,000 available for artistic and $14,000 for academic?

Sorry but it is 14,000 max total. Some get it as a combination of artistic and academic, others only get one type. I am not sure if there is wiggle room or not, perhaps another current parent will know. We recently received a notification of a tuition increase for next year recently that supports the 45,000.00 + amount for tuition, room, board and fees. I would have to sit down with pen or pencil though to make sure all the fees were included. If you look at the tuition and fee page, note that the COPA tuition differs from the rest of the university. The school offers a payment plan which we use and does make the cost seem less painful. A plus is that, unlike some schools, they do not subtract any outside scholarships from their award. We have found that those small local scholarships can add up and really help out.

If you filled out FAFSA and qualify for need based aid, you may get an updated financial aid package.

My son got 17,000 per year for artistic. He should be getting some more for his financial need and merit.

There is no 'limit" per se on the talent awards, regardless of what the website says! I know of many who have received more than the maximum published. And I think there’s nothing wrong with asking for more money. That never hurts!

I agree with @mcpcwhite that you can ALWAYS ask for financial consideration. However, I conversed( within the last week) with 2 individuals at the school responsible for distributing that aid; and was told that all financial dollars had been committed and that we should check back at the end of April to see if any funds would be available. (Translation: if the students to whom those dollars have been offered elect to go elsewhere, some scholarship may be available?) Certainly, the school makes these determinations on a number of factors to which we’re not privy; but the “no scholarship” has played a role in our decision to decline Point Park in favor of other offers.

We have yet to hear anything (yes/no) from Point Park. Anyone else in the same boat?

We haven’t either and I finally emailed them -on Friday- and told them that we’re assuming he didn’t get in since there are several kids who have been accepted and we have heard nothing. I got a response on Monday saying “faculty are currently reviewing candidates and making decisions on artistic acceptance. We hope to have all letters out by the end of March.” We really don’t expect much at this point (Ha).
