Is it possible to get some sort of merit scholarships money while in College? For example, if as a freshaman a student received no money could he, as a sophomore, get money if he showed excellent grades.

Do any schools do this?

Daniel - yes, it's possible to get scholarship money after your freshman year. If you are a freshman, dig around on your school's website in your major department and any related one.... also in the general fin. aid and scholarships pages. Unfortunately it's not likely that it will be much money - the huge scholarships are to attract desirable students to the school, and now that you are there, they figure they have you. You will probably be looking at awards in the $1,000 - $5,000 range that may involve research or other time commitments. The kind of thing that looks great on your resume but doesn't really help with big expenses.
If you are a hs Sr thinking about a school you can't afford in the hopes that you will get huge scholarships from the school once they see how wonderful you are... it's unfortunately not the way the game works. I wish it were. Your best bet for merit money comes while you are still "up for grabs" in the process.

You can also check around in the school/department of your major. SOMETIMES they have scholarships for continuing students, but as was said, most of it is committed to entering freshmen & renewable. Sometimes there are contests you can enter, again the school/department would have more info about these as well & there can be cash prizes as well as nice recognition if you win.

I appreciate the responses. I'll look into specific schools and try to find out if they offer what I described.

Thanks.
