I am from New York and a white male. Does this resume have a chance to get any scholarship money from the school (pending I get in first of all)? And if no, what should I shoot for on my SAT retake to have a shot at some money from the school?

GPA- Roughly 97 cumulative

Class Rank- About 20th of 160

SAT- 1210 (610 Critical Reading, 600 Math)
-Will be taking it again in October

APs Taken- 2 Junior Year (5's on both), 4 Senior Year
SAT IIs- 680 on Biology
- 700 on US History

National Honor Society Member

Member of 2 Varsity Sports

Have Community Service (Roughly 100 hours over the years)

Plan to write optional essay and apply after receiving my scores from SAT in October

But if I get below a 1400 is there still a chance at less than 10,000 or something like that? I’m not too sure I can get a 1400 on the SAT, unfortunately.

Hmmm…haven’t heard about anything less than the $10,000 unless they were in-state students. Merit money is very competitive and some students with more than 1400 have gotten zilch. It has become much tougher to get merit money at Pitt. They are getting an increase pool of students (who may not have considered Pitt before but due to the economy will apply) who have great stats and want the merit money. I just look at the numbers enrolling/applying from my son’s high school – it is an upward trend.

Well that really makes things tough because I probably will not get much financial aid based on a financial need. Also, I hope to make it to med school after college and don’t want to be badly in debt going into med school.

If you have plans to go to med school, I would definitely not go into debt for your undergrad (med school will cost a bundle!). Are you considering any NY schools? In-state tuition would be pretty reasonable. Also take the ACT – you might get a higher score and Pitt will convert it to the SAT scale.

Pitt is my number one choice and if I can get the price down (even if it is still a little more expensive than Buffalo) I will probably chose to go there. I definitely will apply and hope for some type of financial aid and see what happens.

Your shot at merit money is VERY slim…unless you are URM. Child was 2nd in class out of 250…4.5 QPA…every AP class possible - lots of ec activity, etc - 1420 SAT and had to beg for merit money. Since we are in state, child was finally offered $2000. Thankful for that. With stats that you posted, merit aid is less than slim.

Eharr, I think that you have a decent shot at admission, but as the other posters have indicated, I would not expect to see any merit scholarships from Pitt. 1400 does seem to be the unofficial minimum for scholarship consideration of any amount. Buy some SAT prep books and practice! Be sure to take some full-length practice tests. Also, I’m sure that there are many threads with helpful suggestions on how to raise SAT scores.

For those of you who are not familiar with Pitt’s tiers of merit scholarships - the $2,000 IS (in-state) scholarship is the in-state match of the $10,000 OOS (out-of-state) scholarship. The next tier up is the full-tuition scholarship - which is for both IS & OOS.

Pittsmom: When did your child apply? My daughter’s stats are identical to yours (1410 SAT, #1 in class out of 250), GPA and all else the same…She’s already applied for fall 2011. Wonder if time of application has anything to do with it, since everyone says apply early.

I’m banking on the fact that she won’t get anything…oh well…it’s her first choice and a great nursing program, with guaranteed grade school admission.

klfrench - the application was submitted in late October. A few weeks letter the acceptance letter was sent and a week after that a letter for the honors college. When I inquired in December and January about possible scholarship money, I was told to wait that I may hear as late as February. When the end of February rolled around, I emailed, called…you name it. Finally, we received news about the $2,000. My advice to you would be if you daughter doesn’t receive notification of a scholarship within 2 or 3 weeks of her acceptance letter - be persistent.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll try to significantly improve my SAT and hope for the best but the chances of 1400 aren’t very likely. Hopefully I receive solid financial aid and earn outside scholarships so I can go to Pitt.

If I was you I’d take the ACT also. It may fit your test-taking abilities better and give you a better shot at a scholarship… I’m from an ACT area so I took the ACT twice and got a 34, while my only try at the SAT netted me a 1390, probably not enough for the full-tuition I received.
