scholarship money

Darn acissej, I was sure you’d get full tuition with those stats. It looks like your SATs jumped from 2270 to 2310, so you should submit those and ask for more $$$.

Has anyone who has announced a full tuition scholarship on this thread been a PA resident? Over on the main Financial Aid page there was a thread about Pitt where folks were saying that most of the full tuition awards go to OOS students. My D, a junior, is really interested in Pitt, and I’m sad that she appears to be at a merit aid disadvantage due to her instate status.

Podvigs, Last year my in state son didn’t get a dime from Pitt. He was a National Merit Finalist, 1460 combined SAT, 800 Math SATII, 780 Chem SAT II, 4.0 UW GPA, 10 AP’s mostly with 5’s, Eagle Scout, played football, volunteered many hours, etc. We were told that the competition was stiff last year, especially in engineering. He was very disappointed but ended up with a great scholarship at Case Western and is very happy. It will be interesting to see how the full tuition scholarships go this year.

schrizto, yeah I guess it could be a little bit random as well, as hsmom6’s son’s situation shows. My gpa probably wasn’t as high as the other full tuition recipients (even though my school doesn’t rank, I think I did miss the top 10% cut off by a little). Thanks for the advice, though; I’ll definitely send my Oct. SAT scores again and see how it goes. I won’t expect much as both my past and recent CR and M scores were above the 1450 cut off.

acissej, just curious, what are your stats like? I was really shocked when I got my merit award. It was only $2,000 for four years, the lowest amount possible. I was accepted into the PharmD conditional acceptance 6 year program and honors college. To give a quick idea of my stats:

SAT- 770 CR,770 math,710 writing
SAT II- math 2-790,bio E-760
good essay
good recs from bio and calc teacher,GC
4.8 weighted GPA, 3.8 regular GPA
no class rank but probably top 5%
take challenging courses that relate to my intended major
5 in AP bio,calc ab and bc,ush
good ECs
forwarded transcript from summer classes at Harvard
in-state

I asked the woman who sent my transcript if my AP scores are included and she said yes, but I know some other kids submit theirs through collegeboard. Maybe I need to do this?

I thought I was a very well qualified candidate and would receive more merit scholarship…I got $10,000 for 4 years from USP  However, I did not submit my FAFSA because I do not think I will qualify for need-based financial aid, so maybe that had an impact? I got invited to apply for the Chancellor’s scholarship but I do not think I will apply.

I’m just really confused to why I wasn’t offered more merit scholarship and it’s discouraging me from attending one of my top choices for pharmacy school :(

Mine were
SAT: 800 CR, 770 M, 740 W
(I think Pittsburgh actually has seen my most recent SATs (which are the above) because I had made it so that they would be automatically sent when they came out)
SAT II: 800 USH, 790 Chinese with Listening, 740 Math 2
I sent in my essay, but I didn’t get to ask for recs before I got accepted.
94/100 Weighted GPA (like I had stated before, my school doesn’t rank, but I’m probably a little under top 10%)
I didn’t send in my AP scores, but on my transcript there would be 10 AP courses including senior year.
I’m actually not sure how much of EC I had put, because I was a bit rushed while filling out my application during the “So you want to be a pharmacist…” day in August.

We are pretty much alike in terms of numbers and our intended pharmacy acceptance.
I’m actually a bit surprised too that you didn’t get a larger scholarship, seeing that you have very eligible stats. There might be no correlation, as we’re the only two people that I know of so far who have gotten scholarships and were accepted to pharm, but might our lower scholarship money be because we have the conditional acceptance, do you think?

oh yeah, I’m OOS.

acissej and 011lxu - your scholarships are equivalent. The $2,000 merit scholarship is for in-state students and the $10,000 scholarship is for out-of-state students. The next merit level up is the full tuition.

I am wondering as well if the pre-pharm students are getting the lower tier scholarships. Two years ago, I would have said that your stats (for both of you) would be likely to get you full tuition scholarships, but looking at last years’ threads as well as this years’, Pitt’s scholarship rationale is getting confusing. I did note a couple of pre-pharm’ers commenting last year that it seemed their scholarships were lower than those of other admitted majors with equivalent stats.

By the way, good luck to both of you - my D1 is now a P1 at Pitt!

Hmmmm…perhaps students accepted into pre-pharm are selecting Pitt so they don’t have to really “entice” the top students to enroll — so less scholarship money is offered???

Every year there are plenty of head scratching decisions from Pitt. Kids with better or same stats might not get the same scholarship $ and some will get zilch – nothing is guaranteed!

Thanks for the input acissej, QuietType, and MTnest!

I was thinking of sending in some more supplemental materials or even calling or meeting with an admissions/financial aid counselor. Perhaps directly talking to them and letting them know firsthand how much I want to go to Pitt would help? The online application doesn’t ask in detail about your ECs so I was thinking of making a resume of activities not included on my transcript. I could also send in an art portfolio. My midyear report will probably help as well since I got all As in my classes so far (4 APs, 2 honors) first marking period and I got into NHS this year. Haha I probably sound so desperate…

I think I see a similar trend as you guys, with non-pharm majors typically being awarded more scholarship. Which is a bummer considering that even at in-state rates, pharmacy school is the most expensive major and you’re paying for six years.

Rutgers NB is tightening up merit scholarships for the Pharmacy and Business applicants. They are the applicants with the highest stats and had been getting a higher proportion of scholarships than the other Schools, but no longer will. Maybe Pitt is doing something similar.

Oh, and Rutgers added the SAT writing score so now kids need a minimum of 2250, top 5% rank to even be considered for their full ride. Is Pitt considering SAT writing for scholarships?
