Anyone received notice yet? I cannot find any information on when or how scholarship winners are notified. I do not find the website very user friendly so links would be greatly appreciated.
A year ago, my “bearcat” heard in mid-March about his Cincinnatus scholarship (and also an alumni association scholarship). But last year, there was also a week (more or less) where the campus was closed because of cold weather, so everything was delayed.
I’m pretty sure notification came through the website (he got an email that asked him to check the website), and then there was a followup letter by regular mail.
Thanks @guyk27 ! Seems awfully late to be notifying about scholarships but with the sheer number of applications they have received in recent years, I guess they feel they can do whatever they want.
@Cheeringsection After a bit of hunting, I found this on the Cincinnati’s Scholarship Program page:
“Details will be sent to Cincinnatus-qualifying students in early February. Cincinnatus awards will be made in mid-March.”
So, pretty much when @guyk27 said. I wish they’d do this much earlier. UC is really falling off my son’s radar as he’s already gotten a few generous scholarships elsewhere… He hasn’t heard if he’s a “Cincannatus-qualifying student” yet or anything regarding the honors program (he’s probably on the bubble here…). Trying to encourage him to keep his options open…
Has anyone been notified of receiving a Cininnatus scholarship yet this year? “Details will be sent… in early February” has me thinking my son just won’t be hearing at this point. February 24th is probably a little late to still be considered “early February”…
We called today and were told that in mid March one letter will be sent with any awards- FAFSA, honors, departmental, any scholarship, listed in one letter. We were not told of any early notification that a letter is pending. If anyone else hears, please share. We are anxiously waiting so D can make a decision! Went for a 3rd visit last week and received Honors notice a few weeks ago, so at this point we are hoping for the best!
My son heard from UC today by snail mail. Nothing showing online on the Catalyst Student Portal yet.
$3,500 Cincinnatus scholarship (renewable 4 years)
$2,000 Provost scholarship for honors (freshman-only)
Nothing from engineering.
Stats for comparison purposes: in-state; ACT 34; weighted GPA 4.6; unweighted 3.9; top 3% of class.
Yeah I heard today. A 2,000 a year merit scholarship. I’m not disappointed in that but it’s not exactly swaying me towards Cincinnati though either. I mean, Ohio State offered me $2850 a year, which just confuses since Cincinnati is the easier school to get into, at least stats wise? Also, Cincinnati’s COA is higher too, so I’ll probably just go with Ohio State.
Thank you for updates. Nothing in the mail today so hopefully tomorrow! And we hope to have similar news @cabeohio . Similar stats for D but a little extra from CEAS would be nice too!
My daughter heard from UC too. They offered Cincinnatus scholarship of $3000/year and the one-time Provost scholarship of $2000 in one letter. She also received the Cincinnatus Excellence (tuition+board+$1500+Honors) award for NMF in a separate letter. It seems like a generous package to join the Medical Sciences program that she liked anyway. Can all of these be added up? Very grateful. …
Been lurking here for a while, this is my first post.
UC has been our son’s first choice and he was accepted into their Aerospace Engineering program. Likewise accepted into Case Western ($25K scholarship) and OSU ($5700 + honors program). So far, so good…
Yesterday he was offered an underwhelming $2000 from UC. For the sake of comparison, these are his stats:
4.1 GPA (unweighted)
33 ACT
AP History, English, Chemistry; Post-secondary Calculus, Intro Engineering, Intro Physics
Eagle Scout
NHS
I’ve been reluctant to throw all this out there because “life happens” but it came as a real shock considering more competitive schools offered much more generous scholarships. It’s tempting to call UC and ask “are you looking at the right kid?” It appears that they have a very competitive class this year so I’m interested in hearing other’s experiences.
My DS received the same offer from UC and Maximus from OSU. His stats are comparable to your DS but more APs. I wonder if they think they are being used as a safety? It may be worth communicating that UC is your DS’s first choice.
I called Financial Aid. According to the person I spoke with, the $3,500 Cincinnatus and the $2,000 provost that my D received are not combinable with the Excellence. Hmm.
My son got it through mail too. $2000 century award and $3000 for out of State student. Total of $5000/year. It is a pleasant surprise because we are not expecting any money since we are out of state. He is accepted into the DAAP ID program.
Talked w/ several people at UC yesterday. Engineering, Honors, and Cincinnatus advisors were all very helpful even if the result wasn’t to my liking.
Here’s how their process works:
Once they’ve identified kids eligible for scholarships, they compare them to their peers within their requested major (the average ACT for this year’s incoming engineering class was 34. Ho-lee crap). As UC put it, if they didn’t differentiate between majors all of the honors selections and scholarships would be going to the engineering and pre-med students.
Also spoke w/ a coworker whose sons went to UC. Very impressed with the school overall but believes the engineering students get stiffed on $$ because they’ll be paying for school with co-ops.
P.S. Departmental scholarship awards will be going out next week, so it ain’t over yet…
Wow! An average act of 34 is Ivy-league range. Makes for a good peer group.
@ELCid86 - Thanks so much for the details of your phone calls. I find it interesting that you mentioned the departmental scholarship awards will be coming out next week. I thought perhaps all scholarships had been announced already. I hadn’t heard of anyone receiving scholarships directly from Engineering yet so I had been wondering who got those. Guess we all get to be in suspense for a little while longer, but certainly a group with an average ACT of 34 will be tough competition.
There’s no way the average incoming engineering freshman has an ACT of 34. I’d be surprised if that was even true at MIT. Were they talking about the average ACT for students being considered for some scholarship?
@Marakov29 - Indeed, I was contemplating that same thing last night and came to the same conclusion. Did a little research and according to the UC Engineering website, the average ACT for engineering is 29.
Wow. Makes one wonder who gets the presidential scholarships.
