Scholarship Notification

Maggiedog–my daughter made appointments and met with professors in two of the departments she was interested in. One of the physics professors asked her how likely it was that she would attend Pitt, which she found amusing. The visit to campus made a big difference for her.

Ohio-- it may have to do with your class ranking too. Technically UHC requires top 5% (and UHC gives out a lot of the merit scholarships), so that may have something to do with it. Besides that, the fact that you’re from Ohio may be hurting you, since it is a popular Pitt state, and so you are competing against many more students.

Thanks MDMom. He might like it more after he visits. We toured CMU and both of my kids liked CMU. They did not want to tour Pitt at the time - did not like how it looked, and really refused to even walk around the campus. I had heard of so many kids who loved Pitt, but I didn’t push the issue at the time. Now that he has been accepted, he will need to take a closer look.

maggiedog,

Have them [url=<a href=“http://Pittsburgh.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=530&mid=161948373&sid=996&tid=161948373&style=1]browse”>http://Pittsburgh.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=530&mid=161948373&sid=996&tid=161948373&style=1]browse the post from this sports website/url. It may pique their interests in walking around (and into) the buildings, most of which are open to the public. The Cathedral of Learning and its nationality classrooms are a must see, as well as Heinz Chapel, the Union, and Frick Fine Arts. Pitt may not have a classic homogeneous architecture or quad set up (although the Cathedral Lawn and Schenley Plaza are pretty darn nice substitutes), but I don’t think you find a nicer or more impressive collection of facilities, inside and out, anywhere else, even at the Ivies.

That athletic site is really nice. Too bad Pitt’s website can’t offer something similar for prospective students!

Here’s the virtual tour:

Thanks, LurkNess & Awesome.
I called my admissions person and they said they would review it a couple more times; could be as late as February that I get a letter
also, I read somewhere that the scholarship committee only meets on Fridays, does anyone know if this is true??

I think I was the one who posted the info on Friday scholarship review. An admissions counselor told us that when we visited Pitt.

How does pitt notify you of the scholarships?

^^^^^ Pitt’s doing its part to keep the Postal Service afloat. No electronic notification of anything that I’m aware of.

Hi Pitt people. My D FINALLY got scholarship letter today for 10 thou a year. We are really happy and excited for her as I believe this is very likely where she will end up. Still a bit surprised it wasn’t more (really did think she had a shot at least half tuition) given her stats and geographic desirability, but she’s now batting 1.000 with acceptances and academic scholarships so we are trying the half full perspective!

At least now I can come back to CC without gut-wrenching envy! I’m shallow I guess, I just really thought she was worthy!

So now will come the really hard parts…deciding among schols and offers and everything else! At least it is good stuff. Nice to be back.

congratulations Sujormik - I haven’t heard where Pitt has given any Nursing School applicant a dime but that’s to be expected given the small size of their freshman class.

YAY!!! I’m so glad! Although the $10k/year is actually considered the “half-tuition” scholarship (at least when I started it was for OOS- you either for $10k per year, or full tuition. Not sure if they’ve changed that.)

sujormik – Congratulations to your D! Miss you on the 2012 parents thread.

Congrats sujormik! That’s really excellent news, especially considering that’s her top choice! So happy for you!!!

great news sujormik! better late than never!

DD finally got the scholarship letters today. Not enough. We are OOS from Florida and $10K/yr plus $4k/yr for engineering doesn’t come close to making it affordable for us. We are crushed. Pitt was one of her top choices. They had offered full tuition and the $4k engineering scholarship to her older sister 3 years ago. I had falsely believed they were very interested in D2 since they had paid for her air and hotel to come up and visit the school. (They didn’t do that with D1.) I understand that the full tuitions are harder to come by, but I kind of feel like we were led on.

I also can’t help but wonder…do you think that being engineering and getting the $4k engineering scholarship effected her getting full tuition?

Soooooo bummed. No Pitt for us.

I believe it was easier 3 years ago to get the full tuition. I believe Pitt has gotten tons more applications from students with great stats especially when they hear about the full tuition scholarships. It has just become more competitive as time goes by.

Land64shark, what are your daughter’s stats?

Thank you all, we are so relieved!

And I’m glad to be back!!
