Has any OOS EA admitted student received any merit-based scholarship notification?

All scholarships, even merit based ones, can’t be received by any prospective UMich student until financial aid documents are in. Therefore, you won’t receive information about it until mid-march if you have submitted your FAFSA and CSS profile by the deadline.

Please note that if you are not applying for financial aid, you do not need to submit financial aid forms in order to get a merit scholarship:

[Office of Financial Aid: Types of Scholarships](http://www.finaid.umich.edu/Home/TypesofAid/ScholarshipsGrants/TypesofScholarships.aspx)

Actually, shotstop, I don’t believe that is exactly true. My son received a generous scholarship at the time he was accepted (Dec. 08 for 09) and before we had submitted FAFSA etc. It may have changed in recent years, but just so you know, it is not necessarily the way you think. And for the record, I know of out-of-state students who also were offered scholarships in Nov/Dec. via EA back in 08.

You can definitely hear well before March. I am holding in my grateful hands the letter my son received January 21, 2011 offering him a generous engineering scholarship at U of M.

So should I be concerned if I haven’t heard about scholarships?

geez…im worried myself…i have a 2300 and am 4/447 in my class…CoE…i expected something =(

^A very small percentage of admitted students receive merit at UMich. Arguably, more receive need-based aid. Umich does not hand out merit the way some of the privates do. The majority of students admitted all have similar stats, are in the top 10% of their classes, etc. so it would be extra-ordinary achievements in a holistic evaluation that would influence merit more than stats alone.

That said, best wishes for happy news.

With few merit scholarships, UMich will be hard to compete with top private colleges in need-based aid.

medboun - you are mixing up merit and need-based. UMich generally meets in state need and many times for OOS. Merit aid is completely different and rarely a given anywhere except the very top students.

if i’ve already filed my fafsa, when can i expect to get notified about need-based aid? i know i should get something sizable since my efc was 0, but i’d still like to know sooner than later if michigan will be a feasible school to attend (i’m oos, accepted ea). i didn’t get offered any merit aid.

Sometime in march. Don’t forget to send your CSS profile too

SCHOLARSHIP!!!

My son got his scholarship from the Department of Engineering today - $20,000 a year for 4 years for a total of $80,000! (Called “The Engineering Scholarship of Honor”!). We’re out of state (Wisconsin) so it was more of a shock than even a surprise! He’d pretty much written off Michigan due to cost and lack of FA for out of state students but think he’s going to have to try to look into the college a bit more now! ;)

Edited to add that we submitted the CSS several weeks ago but the official forms and FAFSA aren’t complete yet.

Wow that’s phenomenal and deserves big congratulations! Can you by chance post stats as to what kind of student attracts such merit and honor?

Here’s the link to my post on the EA acceptance thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/13616250-post51.html

It’s not very specific to U of M since I was lazy and pretty much just cut and pasted it from his MIT post, but it’ll give you the idea. Probably the biggest “hook” is that he applied this year as a HS junior (he’s skipping senior year). He did have a 36 ACT (taken once sophomore year), 13 AP’s by the end of this (junior) year, plus 4 college classes (Diff Eqns, Multivariate Calc, Organic Chem, Engineering Mechanics) at our local college and is ranked 2 in a class of 411 (juniors) with a 3.98 unweighted. Lots of EC’s, etc. but nothing significant in itself.

I also received notification for the Engineering Scholarship of Honor just today. However, we have to notify them by March 9th if we decide to accept the scholarship. By accepting the scholarship, does this mean I’ve decided to go to U of M, or can I still remain undecided? I won’t find out the decisions for many of my other colleges until mid to late March or even early April.

Here are some of my stats:
36 ACT
Rank: 9/469
GPA: 3.98 UW, 4.29 W
6 APs so far (all 5s except for one 4), and I’m taking 5 AP classes this year.
ECs: Quiz Bowl, TARs, President of NHS

I would believe it’s just the date to accept the scholarship, not necessarily to decide to go to UM, because technically that would breach the National Response Date law…

@Rawk - we were wondering the same thing. Think we’ll try to call next week and find out. My son has all his decisions, but is waiting on Financial Aid decisions from other schools and visit weekends at 3 other schools, only one of which will be before March 9th. I wonder what the ramifications are if you accept then end up not using it. I’m assuming they can’t really do anything, but maybe if you let them know before that they can reuse it for someone else, but otherwise not? I’ll let you know if we find out anything.

I got the same scholarship a few years ago. You can go ahead and accept the scholarship unless you are sure you won’t be attending (i.e. ED kids). It’s not a binding decision to attend. PM me if you have any questions.
