My D got her admission letter today and she also got accepted into HC. ACT is 31 SAT 2040 and she has 4.0 GPA excellent letters from her teachers and guidance C. She never send in her essay. Should she send it in for merit scholarship consideration? She has many hooks: 2 national science awards, NIH internship, national fellowship award and Intel semifinalist. She also got PJAS talent search letter send to Pitt.

Absolutely!

AwesomeOpossum: Thanks

Pitt doesn’t give ****t if your from PA. And tbh UHC is not the big of a deal any student with a 3.0 or above at Pitt can take honor’s classes and it’s not a separate entity/college it’s rather 2 floors in the cathedral.

I had a 2070 4.0 GPA and EC’s out the wazoo including a summer program at pitt and I got nothings except UHC and conditional pharmacy. I go there know because it was still cheaper. But anyway talking to friends from Pitt who have lower Stats go $ because they were not from PA, but just enough to make their tuition equal to in state.

You are clearly not taking advantage of any of the other opportunities the UHC provides, beyond classes, which many of your peers at Pitt are.

Pitt and the UHC both have limits on scholarships they can give to students from each state. I had better stats than you coming from OOS and I only had a half-tuition scholarship because by the time I had applied (mid-December), they had already run out of the allotted full-tuition for my state.

I just want to point out to a lot of people that while justino1234’s rant is very atypical for CC or UHC students, that they do have a point in that stellar stats does not guarnatee you a scholarship in the same way non-stellar stats mean you are out of the running. Keep in mind college admissions (and scholarship awards) are based on a HOLISTIC review. That means your stats, ECs, and your essays and LORs.

Our experience. We were in a confusion with the Prestige Application vs doing a normal application which was free. Through back and forth emails. We were told to do the regular application for free, but they stated that we would have the benefits of the Prestige application ie faster processing. Once our application was sent we received acceptance in about 1.5 weeks. 2 weeks later he got Honors College letter and a seperate letter for conditional Masters degree in engineering. Now we’re like everyone else waiting on scholarship notification. FYI we’re from CA like possum. Little scary since we did turn in our application a little on the late side. Even with half scholarship it might be too expensive. sigh. We have similar stats to some of the above that did not get much. PANIC We’re also stressing about FIRST sigh.

I’m from VA :P

Just an FYI, whenever anyone I knew mentioned this letter to SSOE during our senior year, they seemed completely surprised that such a thing exists. The guaranteed engineering master’s seems to be something that Admissions concocted without ever telling SSOE. When people said to their advisor “Well I might stay here since I’m guaranteed” the advisor basically said that they had no idea what the student was talking about.

HOWEVER, the students that got the guaranteed were the students who ended up doing well at SSOE anyways, and regardless of the initial guaranteed Master’s program, would definitely get into it if they applied.

Just a caveat for those of you out there: The guaranteed Engineering Master’s is not smoothly run or acknowledged the way the Dental, Med, and Pharm guarantees are run.

After several weeks of waiting, we are extremely happy that my D received a $15K scholarship letter yesterday. We are OOS. If you have strong stats and have not heard anything yet about scholarships, don’t give up!

stoltfar

Do you mind telling me what state you are from?
Thanks

I applied with the Pitt Prestige app a couple weeks ago and received my acceptance today. I only submitted my Transcript, SAT and ACT scores, as well as the information required for the application. With my stats (below) will this be enough for a significant scholarship, or should I send more?
GPA: 3.65 UW (3.79 W)
SAT: 2230 (1460 CR+M)
ACT: 34 Composite
SAT II: 770 Math 1, 710 Math 2

Also, do you think there is a good chance of getting into the Honors College?

My D got into engineering.UHC. Got 10 k and 2k from engineering. Invited to apply for GAP medicine. We r from VA so this makes it about in state cost for us. She is very happy.
Stats SAT 2270. GPA 3.9 unweighted. Top 5 percent. NASA intern.

@vryproudmom - we are from NY

stoltfar

Just trying to make sense of their system. Congratulations to your daughter!

Your SAT/ACT both are in UHC range. Technically you need to be in the top 5% of your class (if it ranks) as well to get UHC, although sometimes they don’t really look at that, just a strong GPA.

Your GPA is OK, it’s a bit on the lower end (weighted) for scholarships compared to other people, but your strong test scores help to offset it. I think you should send in as much stuff as possible for scholarships-- I thought I heard that they really look for the extra stuff (resume, LORs, essays) for scholarship recipients. Also do you have any other hooks- major, OOS, gender, ethnicity? Those might help you.

S just his as well. Turnaround was insanely fast. About a month for acceptance, honors college, and scholarship. S only got $15k per year. No full tuition. Still pricey but brings it inline with our instate tuition in CA.

S was a 34 superscored on ACT, 4 AP classes all 5s, SATII mid 700s on all the science ones. GPA unweight 3.9 and weight its around 4.6. No full tuition sort of a bummer. It makes our UA scholarship look a lot better. We’ll see how things work out if any additional scholarships come in.

Oh and declared major was engineering physics.

Our neighbor turned down the Chancellor’s last year due to health reasons. I doubt it was given to anyone else b/c she didn’t decide not to take it until August. All kinds of reasons the numbers are low. Hopefully more awarded this year.

I still haven’t received any scholarship notification or honors college information and I’m starting to get worried. I got my acceptance mid-October, about 1 week after they received everything.

I haven’t seen much on here about scholarships lower than full tuition do those seem to be decided later? I’m not really expecting a full tuition or even honors college because of my GPA but I definitely hope i qualify for some merit aid. I had a 1490/2060 SAT and around a 3.9 GPA weighted but with a very strong upward trend

My son received $15,000. We are out of state. so it basically brings us to in state tuition.

cdm106 - My son (current Pitt soph.) didn’t get his scholarship notice until March (after I called when I was in the same position as you - acceptance in Oct. and then no word) so I wouldn’t give up hope. I would call admissions and directly ask whether the scholarship committee has reviewed your file or not. There are alot of partial merit scholarships people have mentioned on the thread so it isn’t a full tuition or nothing place. Good luck!
