Danforth and Moog! :)

Congratulations to everyone else as well. Sorry to everyone who wasn’t selected, but WashU is still a great school, though I doubt I will attend. Too Midwestern for me :)

@ST2: Do you know how many people are selected as finalists for the Compton Scholarship this year? I’m still in the shocking mood now, even though I already cried for 10 minutes(the first time ever in my life) in my room 2 hours ago. I can’t find any reasons for them to reject me. Seriously, I looked back at everything I did toward my application, and it shows very clearly the extreme passion I have on mathematics. I really don’t want to whine on my failure, but I really want to appeal their decisions on me. It’s too harsh to reject me, really, especially when the reviewer are math faculties(is it true?). Can you let me know the quickest way to appeal the decision, if possible?

ST2 - So do all Ervin and Rodriguez finalists get some type of merit (full or half tuition)? I assume this is the case since they are, in fact, called finalists. I just wondered if only a few of the finalists are actually chosen to receive the scholarships after the interviews. Thanks.

ST2 - is it true that all Rodriguez scholars get a $2500 stipend?

Is that also true for all Ervin Scholars regardless of how much tuition money they receive?

^
ST2:
do you mind answering the same question but with Danforth? I heard rumors on other college confidential threads that as long as you were a “Danforth Finalist” that meant you were guarenteed a half ride.

From the nomination form it said there are 40 Danforth Finalists. From this article: [Danforth Scholar Solawetz is ‘ambassador of hope’ | Newsroom | Washington University in St. Louis](Danforth Scholar Solawetz is 'ambassador of hope' - The Source - Washington University in St. Louis) it says there are four full ride Danforth scholarships awarded.

It seems unlikely Danforth would give 4 full and 36 half-rides… so do many Danforth finalists walk away with nothing? Do you know the average number of half rides Danforth offers?

Many, many, many thanks!!!

@ghjk:

8 are selected, out of something like a couple thousand, according to the dude who called me.

@Rubix314: Thank you very much for your reply, and congratulation to you!!! I’m also really curious to see your stats, if you don’t mind:)

@ghjk: Sure, I guess…

4.0 GPA, valedictorian in fairly good public high school
APs: Calc AB, Calc BC, Stats, Bio, Physics C Mech, Chem, US, English Language (5s on all)
Speech and Debate Captain
Science Bowl Captain/founder
AMC10: 138
AMC12: 126
AIME: 9 (took it 4 times)
USAMO: bad (took it 3 times)
USAMTS: 96, Gold medal
ARML: Team high scorer
Mathcounts State Champ (Oregon)
I also coach the current mathcounts team at our middle school.

For the research, I had an internship last summer where I worked with a small company that makes a math-based software. It’s called Geometry Expressions, something in between Mathematica and Sketchpad. I did my own “research project” on the geometry behind irrigation crop circles. I also wrote a paper finding/proving the largest sector that can be inscribed in an arbitrary right triangle. I don’t know how impressive that sounds, but in retrospect, it wasn’t impressive to me. Ah well.

Uh…that’s a brief overview. I said Lord of the Flies and Niels Bohr for the essays (but gave somewhat non-generic explanations for both). Feel free to ask about anything specific…

Any other Compton finalists out there? I’ve only seen the other ones on this thread…

Rejected from everything

Rejected from Lien scholarship. My stats weren’t the best either…

Oh well. I’ll just hope for a pleasant surprise come April…

rejected danforth…

What happens to Annonymous93’s Danforth and Moog since s/he is not onterested in Wash U.
We’ll take it . . . in a heart beat. Even willing to take either or and share the other one. Would seriously NOT take this for granted.

My D was accepted ED and was rejected from both Rodriguez and Ervin. She seemed like an excellent fit for Rodriguez. She has undergone a physical hardship and recovered beautifully, has awards for community service and leadership and is at the forefront of uniting kids from diverse backgrounds from her school. Her grades and ACT were in the top 10% nationwide. Any ideas from anyone if ED acceptance put her at a disadvantage?

AHH!!! I applied for Moog, Rodriguez, Friends of Music, but I got Ervin!!! AH! I’m so excited! Congrats to all!!!

How are you all finding out about these scholarships?
I applied in early December for RD and moved a month ago. I emailed my processor new address and number a week ago but I haven’t received anything. Were acceptances/rejected letters emailed or mailed?

Oh, JSYK I also applied for Ervin just in case there is any misunderstanding. I know in my previous post it kind of looked like I meant that they just gave it to me out of the blue!

But anyway, as for stats:

Region: Oklahoma
Race and Gender: Black, Female
GPA:Well, my school doesn’t do GPA ( I go to a boarding, Math and Science Magnet school for juniors and seniors) but I have mostly As on my entire high school transcript overall
ACT: 33 single-sitting, 34 super scored
SAT: 2140 Super scored (although I can’t remember if I gave it to them or not…)
AP: Just one… Lang and Comp (5)
ECs: No ECs at my school, but I have still managed to be a 3-year All-state choir member, various summer music programs, and 4 years of voice lessons and piano. Before switching schools I was super involved in theater, choir, and Beta Club
Volunteering: Early Head Start, Medical Center,
Recs: Written by teachers that I have had since the beginning of this year O.o
Essays: I actually had a really hard time writing this one and I wasn’t so sure about how good it was, but I wrote from my perspective while volunteering at my town’s Early Head Start and comparing its diversity to that of my school and how they had both helped me to become a leader in my school and community
Other: I visited the school once for Discovery Weekend and I have had a summer internship in Organic Chemistry before my senior year and right now I am doing a Mentorship at OMRF (Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation) in Immunology and Cancer Research focusing on T-Cell development

:D

Neither for me. I found out from my portal. I haven’t been called either, but I expect that to be a bit complicated since I go to a boarding school and we’re not allowed to have cell phones…

Impressive! ^

is anyone else having problems logging onto to the portal? it says my account is locked… strange.

yeah, I found it happens to me when I type in the wrong password
