Scholarship Notifications?

I applied and was accepted to UGA through Early Action, but as an out of state student I'm going to need a scholarship in order to attend. I was wondering if all the scholarships have been awarded by now or if they are waiting until all admissions are offered to finish that process? UGA is my first choice so I really hope I'll be able to go! Thanks

The admissions blog stated that the scholarship decisions would come out in stages, with many not coming out until well into April. My daughter is in the same boat. Good luck!

We were in your same boat last year. We called early May to make sure all letters had been mailed out. We thought DD had a decent chance at one particular one but it didn’t happen. She went to her second choice and all is well (and easier on our budget!)

I am very curious about this also. I have a 3.6 UGA GPA and a 30 ACT and I thought that I would possibly be eligible for the classics scholarship worth half the difference between out of state and in state tuition. UGA is very much my top choice school and my friend got her classics scholarships today, with just a higher GPA than me. A scholarship has not appeared on my status for me, so does that mean I am not going to receive one?

We are out of state and visited UGa last week. They said that the first round of scholarships have been sent out and they were considering the second round which should be out by apr 1. S will attend only if he receives the out of state waiver. I was told that first round consisted of students with high stats.

Awarded the classics scholarship on April 11th!!! Im going to be a UGA bulldawg! 3.6 UGA GPA and 30 ACT with good essays, recommendation letter, and extracurriculars. If I can get it so will y’all!

Congratulations, Meg! Did you get a letter or was it up on your account?
What is the classics scholarship?

Thank you! And it was on my status, I have not received the letter yet! There is a box that appears in the lower right corner below the “test scores” box and above the “cancellation of application” box. Classic scholarship covers half the difference between in state and out of state tuition, so about 9,100$ a year!

So my son received the classics scholarship as well, which is half tuition. I checked with admissions and it is for all 4 years.
Meg, what are your other choices? My son will be paying $50k less if he attends out state’s flagship where he has been admitted into the honors program. At uga he is not in the honors but he can always apply to be admitted his sophomore year. We are debating what to do? He had applied for business which I understand you take prerequisite the first year before actually getting in.

This is just my own opinion–I am a huge fan of UGA, but unless I had a lot of money to burn, there is no way I would pay $50K more to attend any state’s flagship school, not even the most prestigious ones. Study after study shows that choice of school is not that big a factor in overall career success, but owing a lot more money will seriously limit your son’s options. Many kids like the novelty of going to another state’s school, and UGA does have an excellent business school, but even if he pays that extra $50K off in ten years rather than a longer term, it will be nearly $600/month without any other college debt. And ten years is a long time in itself.

Thanks for the input, nancy.

I am a bit confused about the classic scholarship. Does it mean we subtract the 9,100$ from the out of state tuition or so we pay $9100 in tuition?

My daughter received her classic scholarship notification today in an email. She probably won’t attend as she got a much better deal from some other big flagship schools (Ohio State!) Here is a cut and paste from the email she received:
The University of Georgia is pleased to inform you that you have been selected to receive the 2014 University of Georgia Classic Scholars Award. This award is In recognition of your strong academic achievement and is offered to first-year, non-Georgia resident students. The Classic Scholars Award provides a waiver for one-half of the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition. The current four-year value of this waiver is $36,420.

The University of Georgia Classic Scholars Award will have a minimum value of $9,105 a year and is renewable for up to a total of four years, or eight terms of full-time undergraduate enrollment (or until completion of your bachelor’s degree, whichever occurs first) as long as you maintain a cumulative UGA grade point average of at least 3.0. Tuition has not been set for 2014, but here is an example of the value of your award if you were attending UGA this year:

Estimated cost of UGA 2013-2014
(Tuition, fees, room, board, books, transportation, and living expenses) $40,274
Less Value of Classic Scholars Award ($9,105)*
Total remaining cost to attend UGA (not including other financial aid) $31,169

Crazymom1, do you mind sharing your D’s stats? My D will be shooting for the same scholarship next year.

Crazymom1 thanks for sharing that email. My son has been out of town for a tournament and must have received it as well. The cost of attendance is still very high as compares to our state’s flagship

Recieve a leadership presidential scholarship yesterday! I was really surprised. 1930 SAT but a much higher GPa. I am also head of a lot extra curriculars. Good look to everyone. Hope you all get good news.

As requested, daughter’s stats are 29 ACT, 3.94 wtd gpa (don’t know unwtd) 6 APs (the easy ones), 4 years HS dance team & 1 year as captain, student leader, some volunteering. She applied to many, many schools & was accepted to most. Very proud!

And well you should be, Crazymom1! Best of luck to your D at UGA!
