Thanks for all the info on this thread. My 11th grade son is developing a college list. Personal issues negatively impacted his GPA 9th grade which is a challenge to find merit.
Great to know it is only core subjects which are counted.

@General%20tso%20chicken
if your HS transcript lists the 3.6 W GPA, Alabama will accept it for the Presidential scholarship, and that’s going to be hard to top.
my feeling is that it is worth the $40 application fee to see if Ole Miss will give more money. if they do, great, and if not, then you still save a pantload with the UA Presidential.
either way it is a win-win situation so congratulations to you and your son.
Thanks much I feel the same way.
If all things are equal and ole miss only coughs up the equivalent to the bammie presidential plus the 2500.00 engineering scholarship then bammie in my opinion is the much better choice.
But again if ole miss offers more dollars then that of course has to be considered.
He did visit Oxford a few days ago, liked the campus and enjoyed the visit.
This Thursday he’s going back to alabama for the engineering tour. I’ve heard fantastic things about alabama’s engineering facilities. I think he’ll likely make up his mind after the visit.
Thanks much for your thoughts.
^Ole miss does something with the unweighted or considers some classes as core that others schools don’t. The reason I know this is that DS got in to the provost scholars and they require a 3.25 high school GPA. While he has that with all classes or weighted with only core classes he does not have that with only unweighted core classes.
My reason for mentioning this is that your son’s Ole Miss figured GPA may make him eligible for other scholarships that require over a 3.0 .
That’s very helpful. Thank you.
The Award Notification section has had this message on the status page for a few days…
Hopefully this means we’ll hear something soon.
Having trouble accessing website to check…anyone else experiencing this?
Is this on the application status page? I don’t see anything similar yet.
The status page is back to normal with no new scholarship information.
I thought when we visited that they said we wouldn’t here about scholarships until Feb or March…
Wow that’s really late.
@MichiganGeorgia From the Special Programs & Scholarship Application status page
Fingers crossed!
That’s hopeful!
Question about criteria: according to the chart, Ole Miss looks at GPA and SAT scores when considering merit awards. DS has a 3.8 UWGPA but only an 1100 on the RSAT. Would he still be considered for a merit award with these stats? Just curious, we submitted his application last night.
@sbgal2011 From the Academic Excellence Scholarship chart it looks like your DS might be below the level for scholarship. But there is hope…
I would give them a call.
He is short on the SAT score requirement but exceeds the GPA significantly so I wondered if that would balance out. I guess we will find out soon enough. Thank you for your response!
@sbgal2011 Unless they have changed it the test-score requirements for the Ole Miss Academic Excellence Award can be met right up to the moment of enrollment (most colleges have a December cutoff). If planning to go to Ole Miss your son should take both the ACT and SAT each time it is offered right up until the June 2017 administration.
My daughter has made a 32 on the ACT, which is high enough for just a few dollars short of full tuition if she were to go to Ole Miss. Her ACT is much higher than her SAT in percentile terms. So taking both tests is likely to produce a higher result, and different students perform differently. In my opinion the ACT rewards English and Reading ability more than the SAT, which more heavily weights math.
The language @STEM2017 mentions concerning the revised SAT is likely a remnant from when they didn’t have actual score requirements calculated. These are now calculated and on the website, but I don’t suppose it hurts to ask.
Scholarship amounts have been posted for my S. Good luck everyone!
Do you know per chance in what order people are notified?
My son was accepted a couple of months ago and we have yet to be notified of scholarship determinations.
General tso chicken - did you check his myolemiss account? It took me awhile to find it, if STEM 2017 hadn’t told me where on the website I would still be looking!
Go to the “New Student” tab in MyOleMiss
On the right side you will see “Financial Aid”
