How does the Cal handle with outside scholarships? Once reported, does CAL reduce your financial aid package according to your scholarships?

Say if I win a $1,000 Scholarship, will Cal reduces my Undergrad Grant by $1k? Or will the 1k has no effect on my financial aid package?

Thanks :D!

it won’t go down unless ur need is met 100%…

Basically, I want to apply for scholarships so they can pay off the loans that Cal expects me to pay each year… I’m just worried that they might not use the scholarships for the loans, but just use it to reduce my other grants :(!

nah, it goes towards loans first, then work study, then the other stuff

Yah, that’s awesome to hear then. I’ll be encouraged to apply for scholarships then :p!

I have a similar question, let’s say im expected to take out $8000 in loans, because that’s what’s left over after the gift aid. and i win about $10,000 in scholarships, will the extra $2000 roll over the next school year, or will they deduct 2000 in my gift aid?

I assume so… perhaps lets wait for a more definite answer :p!

depends if ur need is met… but in this case, it looks like you’ll get a refund check (not necessarily 2k), so things don’t roll over

"it won’t go down unless ur need is met 100%… "

So that means there’s no point for a person with an EFC of 0 to apply for scholarships?

not necessarily, i think cal meets 70% of need… but in most circumstances 70% is enough to meet housing and tuition costs

sreezon101 is correct,

I depend oon outside scholarships right now. this year I had more than enough to pay for my tuition and the rest/extra is given to you as a check.

You have to pick it up in University Hall

You can you use it for what ever or pay for next year,

i hope i helped!
