scholarship question

just for confirmation: can an applicant who applied for the USC scholarships, not get the scholarship but still gain admittance to USC?

yes..........

Yes you can, but you won't find out that you got accepted when all the scholarship people do.

Don't some people, even if they aren't canidates for the scholarships get notified with the scholarship canidates in late jan/early feb if they apply by the december deadline?

S was in the first wave of acceptances AFTER those who were invited in for scholarship interviews. He received his notice at the end of February.

Even though most people think about presidential and dean's when they refer to "scholarships", there are a host of smaller awards, e.g., a university scholarship of 4-8k a year. While not as meaty as the ones that get the limelight, money is money and every little bit helps.

@ beeish, it's possible, but usually those people get their notifications after the first wave of acceptances for scholarship interviews.

last year my son submitted his application by the scholarship deadline and he received his acceptance on Jan. 28th. in a beautiful envelope with a very very nice brochure. 2 days later he received a letter stating that he was up for the Trustee scholarship (Full tuition) and that he needed to come in to participate in a two day interview in February. He had a wonderful time with his host student. The parents also participated in a two day event. USC does a great job in promoting their school. My son did end up getting the Trustee scholarship which was wonderful, but he ended up getting a much better offer from Harvard where he did accept and is currently very happy.

USC is a great school with a great reputation and wonderful academics.

Best of luck to those applying this year

In 2005, S applied to USC to be admitted for 2006. He got a note in January that he didn't receive Presidential or Trustee Scholarship but wasn't notified of admission until March 2006. Because he was a NMF, he did end up getting a presidential scholarship + some additional merit funding anyway from USC where he is now a junior.

Congratulations to both HImom and guitars101. You should both be so proud of your children.

Thanks--yes, we are grateful that S has had wonderful merit aid at a school where he is happy (though he is not thrilled with some of the profs, of course). Wish D was able to attract any merit funding but probably won't. She's happy she'll be joining her brother as an exchange student in January.

Hmm. What are the chances of getting a scholarship from USC if you are in for interview?

And will USC pay for the traveling expenses?

Dou, if you are being considered for a scholarship, you will receive a letter which indicates which one you are up for (Trustee or Pres), and when the interviews take place. It will be a two day stay at USC in February or March. The first day consists of various activities and info sessions, and the interview is conducted on the second day. You are hosted by a present student and stay in the dorm. All meals are included.

I can't remember exact figures, but I think around two thirds of Trustee invitees were offered the scholarships so chances are pretty good. Sometimes Trustee invitees are given the Presidential, Pres invitees the Deans, and sometimes Pres people end up with a Trustee though this is rarer. The interviews generally lasted between 20 mins and 40 mins, with 2 to 4 interviewers.
The Deans does not require interviews and recipients of those are informed after the others.

USC pays for part of the traveling expenses when you go through their travel agency to book flights.

SC pays most of the travel expense for the scholarship interview (there's a service charge from the campus travel service). I never did see how what percentage of Trustee/Presidential applicants actually got the scholarship, but I thought it was in the 50% range (I'm sure other people can correct me on that number).

My friend's S who was interviewed did have his travel expenses paid (but not his dad's who came with him). He was awarded Trustee. My D's friends also interviewed & got President's. My S was not invited to interview but because he was a NMF, he was given the NMF Presidential. Some years, they just fly an interviewer to HI & interview all the scholarship candidates, it just depends. The school will let you know whether you're invited for scholarship interviews or not. Just because you're not has no bearing on whether you'll be accepted or perhaps get another scholarship like leadership or dean's. I have been impressed with the generousity of USC's merit award program, just wish their tuition & fees were lower.

Wow, that sounds so cool!

By the way, when are short-listed applicants notified of interviews usually? Are notices given by mails ONLY or will the adcom send emails as well?

they are probably only sent by mail... thats what seems to have happened in the past....
but I am pretty sure, from what other people have said that short-listed applicants are notified by the end of january

Dou. if you receive acceptance in late January or early February, you are most likely up for a scholarship, and there is a way to determine which one you're being considered for online (at least this was the case last year). My D was able to see that she was a Trustee invitee before she received the letter in the mail. Scholarship applicants received mailed letters shortly after the acceptance package,.. if I remember correctly my D received hers 3 or 4 days later.

Last year there were no emails - all by regular mail. (Things may change, though!) If your acceptance arrives in late January you just start holding your breath! The letters came about 4 - 7 days after the acceptances. This is a thread from last January - you can see the dates the acceptances were arriving and some of the stats for scholarship interview invitees: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/454785-stats-only-usc-official-decisions-fall-2008-a.html?highlight=accepted+2008 GOOD LUCK!
