they only pay travel expense for domestic flights so internationals do not get reimbursed.
and trustee can end up getting a dean's (very sad)
The travel agency charges more and students have to pay for some fee first so I'm not sure if it's a good deal.

At least one student interviewing for presidential got trustee, so it can work both ways. Any scholarships these days are a good thing. Dean's is still 25% off tuition, renewable for 4 years, so that is over $8,000/year and can really help as well.

One other thing to keep in mind is that it is possible to get additional merit aid on top of your award. For example, engineering sometimes gives sme merit awards of $2500/year and National Merit can give one of $1000/year above & beyond the Presidential; schools can also give research awards (where you do research work but are paid). These are all for 4 years, provided you meet renewal qualifications. It's a tremendous savings.

When do interviews usually take place? Mid Feb?

I think they begin in March. At least, thats how it was last year.

It may vary--I believe for the class of 2006, they interviewed Hawaii scholarship candidates in HI in January or February, but I'm not sure (we weren't among those interviewed & it was too long ago).

In 2008, my S attended the Explore USC Trustee Scholar interviews on Feb 21 and 22. I think Trustee interviews were also offered on one other set of dates. Others probably know more about the Presidential Explore interviews. I believe he was notified of winning the scholarship at the end of March. Yay!! And good luck to all.
