Scholarship Questions/Advice

Son is having major difficulty in one class and is considering taking a W. Before he sets up appt to discuss this I want to have some discussions with him and hope I can have some information from this group.
This would drop him down to 11 hours. Does this impact scholarships for this year since he won’t be a full-time student anymore? He showed up with 9 hours of credit–does this have any impact.
How does a W affect GPA calculation? Is it just not factored in at all or are there are adverse impacts.

Scholarships are for full time (12+ credit hours) students only, so I would go ahead an assume that if he should withdraw, he probably will not be eligible for the scholarship.

^ disagree with this. There was a post similar in the past and the scholarship was not affected. I’ll see if I can find it.

Scholarships are for full time (12+ credit hours) students only

I had not heard this. Where is this written?

I would email scholarships@ua.edu and ask. or better yet, email amber.capell@ua.edu and ask.

I saw the same post as Class2012Mom. I am sure she will find the info as she’s a better googler than I.

Definitely call and email about this situation. Please have your S contact the teacher to see if there is any hope for the grade. Sometimes there is hope.

Good Luck!!

About the “W” grade:

Grades of “P,” “W,” “NA” or “NC” are not used when computing the GPA.

AL34 posts says no minimum to keep scholarship

Cuttlefish, is the thread you remember?

^^^^ Yes, it is!

I remember that thread as well.

Contact the prof and see if anything can be worked out…extra credit, a written report. Make sure that the student keeps in touch with the professor by going to office hours.

@M2CK: It was in my letter when I received the presidential scholarship. It stated (and I’m paraphrasing here, because I don’t have it in front of me) that I would remain eligible for the scholarship provided I remained enrolled in 12+ credit hours a semester and maintained at least a 3.0 UA GPA.

… Or, maybe not. Huh. I really need to go look at that letter.

First off…don’t panic.
Second: contact scholarships directly and get your answer in writing.
Third: you have until October 30th to withdraw from a class

See academic calendar link:

In my daughters’ letters it says:

“Congratulations on your admission to The University of Alabama! Based on your test score and high school GPA, we are awarding you a Presidential Scholarship of $23,950 per year (which is the value of out-of-state tuition for a full-time student based on the 2013-2014 cost). This scholarship will be renewed each year for four years of undergraduate studies if you maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher each semester. If the cost of tuition rises, your scholarship will be adjusted to cover that increase.”

There is no mention of a minimum number of hours.

We can all post past experiences and info about the scholarships, but if I were the original poster and money was on the line, I would want the information straight from the “horse’s mouth”.
Contact scholarships directly:

If I remember correctly, dropping below 12 hours means you are no longer considered a full time student. This could have other implications besides the scholarship.

At Bama Bound my D was advised to register for least 15 hours, so that if she had to drop or withdraw from a class she would still carry 12 hours. There seemed to be some important reason to remain a full time student.

Here’s the information from the current academic catalog on withdrawing from a class and dropping below full time status (12 hours).

[Withdrawal < The University of Alabama](http://courseleaf.ua.edu/introduction/academicpolicies/withdrawal/)
“A student contemplating withdrawal from a course is strongly encouraged to contact their academic adviser before changing their academic schedule inasmuch as it can result in delayed graduation. Also, dropping below full-time status may impact insurance (health & auto), financial aid and scholarships. (Full-time status is 12 credit hours for undergraduate students, 9 credit hours for graduate students and 10 credit hours for law students.)”

It says it “may” impact financial aid and scholarships. How’s that for being vague? In addition to contacting the scholarship office, you should contact your academic adviser.

Also, housing may be an issue. I’m not certain, but you may have to be a full time student to live on campus.

I just called them and they said there is no credit hour requirement for renewal. They said if you drop credits that the scholarship amount adjusts down to reflect that, since tuition is less. That’s crazy. At UAH it’s 24credits per year, says so on the webpage. My D’s NMF scholarship at ASU requires 30 credits per year. I sort of don’t believe it, but phone is (205) 348-8201 if you want to check yourself.

I would contact Scholarships personally to be sure. I was not implying in my post that anyone should rely upon past, current, or future experiences of others. I posted the letter sent to 2014 incoming freshmen in response to a previous post about the wording in the scholarship letter. Since there is so much at stake, I wouldn’t rely on limited information provided in the letter or another poster’s experience either.

Dropping below full time status would no longer impact health insurance at this point since the regulations have now changed and providers are required to allow children to remain on a parent’s policy until age 26 even if they are not enrolled in school at all. We no longer have to provide proof of enrollment for our health insurance provider since the law changed. I guess it could possibly impact an auto insurance discount. I think this statement hasn’t been revised, but I would still call Scholarships.

Got this e-mail from scholarship office:

There are no completed hours requirements for UA Scholarships. As long as you meet the GPA requirements the scholarship will renew. However, it will only be available for 4 years (8 semesters).

If you have department specific scholarships they may require you to apply for it every year.

Hope this answers your question!

Best,
Joshua Kirkland

I still am having a hard time believing this. No credit hour requirement. Amazing.
