If MIT's GPA is calculated on a 5.0 scale, does it get scaled down for things such as students' scholarship renewals. Some scholarships ask that students maintain a 3.0 GPA to renew their scholarships, so does this mean 4.0 MIT=3.0 in this case OR did MIT make such a system so that 3.0 MIT = 3.0 everywhere else (that would be trippy).

Alas, when MIT reports your GPA for scholarships, they'll note that it's out of 5.0. If you're required to maintain a 3.0 (=B average) to keep your scholarship, it will be a 4.0 at MIT.

Wouldn't it be nice, though. :)

:( I was hoping that MIT was to be considered 1.0 harder than the average college (Go Pass/No Record! Yipee)

Well, certainly nobody will stop you from going around your hometown talking about how you got a 4.0 your first year at MIT. You don't have to tell them that it's out of 5.0. :D

I was hoping to tell my parents the same thing ;)

but but... that's horrible. some of my scholarships require me to maintain a 3.5 gpa.... ahhhhhh!

well, that's not impossible.
