Scholarship Thread

The deadline for being considered for those scholarships was 1/15, but I agree that they shut the door pretty quickly after that.

Wow, that is very very depressing.:( I thought people were notified of scholarships all the way into March/April? This sucks way too much to be real and now I really would rather go to an Ivy Leage college, provided I get accepted into one.

It seems to me that last year's thread on the Bentley and Shipman scholarships had some people who heard much later, maybe they do a first round, and if they get turned down, they invite others? Just trying to keep hoping...

I would encourage anyone who is interested to call the LSA scholarship office and get their questions anwered directly.

Does anyone know if a scholarship that covers tuition, would apply to study abroad? Or does one have to pay tuition and then study abroad fees are in addition? Trying to plan ahead.

Fredmar. That depends on which study abroad program you choose. Some include tuition in the program fee and for others you pay both. If you look at the Study Abroad page on the LSA site it's really helpful.

Thanks, zuzu, I had checked the website for Study Abroad but I got more help when looking at LSA specifically as you suggested. I still don't know the whole answer, but there was a whole cost estimator that was very helpful.

Today D was notified by snail mail that she's invited to interview for the Shipman scholarship. Needless to say it was unexpected, but she is really excited to visit Michigan.

How will I know if I got any scholarships from UMich? Will they inform us in our student packet?

You get it later.

I know a guy who got LSA that wasn't notified until March.

I don't think I'll get anything. This is really where I feel shafted by the school because I didn't even get that puny little 1500 or whatever it is, and I've got pretty good marks. Some people that have REALLY good scores that I know didn't even get that. Go figure.

Yeah, I probably sound bitter, but I'm not gonna lie to myself or anyone else. It's pretty lousy.

ok i have a question
i had my application completed by 12/20/06
but didnt get the 4/4 email until jan 16th....
so can i not get the scholarships?

Well this is depressing...I was admitted 12/15 and no word of a scholarship yet of any sort...and I was hoping I would get a little bit at least. Michigan is really expensive for out-of-staters.

same here. i got some letter to apply for an out of state fin. need scholarship but its not likely that ill get one of those. looks like ill be staying in texas.

dude go to UT....great school. i think im going to illinois urbana or OSU since michigan is so hard to get into it seems....and idk dont really like purdue

Son first got the $15 K per year. Then another $20 K per year. Now also received Shipman nomination. Yes I know even with a 7% percent per year increase over the next four years that this is more than the total out-of- state for room and board. They will cap it at total cost. Pretty generous. I am impressed. He has outside scholarships that will pay for books, PC, and other expenses. He may have to look hard at this given that places like MIT and Stanford give no non-need academic merit money!!!!

I was admitted 12/15 and just got $20,000/year on Thursday...don't lose hope Enteril!

Congrats to your son ood!

Will he attend the Shipman interview session? My D will be there, she received the MSA but not a LSA scholarship. There seems to be some disparity between the Shipman letter and the LSA website about the $$ amounts of Shipman awards (the letter states a higher figure for scholars and a lower amount for semis than does the web), do you have any clarification on this? If not, we're planning on calling next week just to confirm the total cost of the award. Agree that we'll have to take a long, hard look at the need-only financial aid offers compared to this very generous merit money.

mellohappy, are scholarships generally sent by mail or are you also notified on Wolverine Access/e-mail somewhere?

I'm instate and was accepted a couple months ago. I got the 8,000/year engineering scholarship and regents award, but was hoping for a Shipman invite. However, reading the stats of some of the Shipman candidates and seeing how I haven't gotten an invite by now, is it pretty safe to assume that I never will? Here's my stats:

White male
34 ACT
4.0 UW gpa
6 AP classes (school doesn't offer them until junior year)
decent ECs / essays

Congratulations, entomom and olddad, the Shipman is such an honor, and I assume you'll be touring the continent with the college fund that you won"t be needing!

What are your kids' stats? Likely coming to Michigan, or waiting to hear in April?
