My son did this program two years ago, Mini's D did this program last summer -- it is a fantastic program, so if you are interested here is the link:

My d. won one of the scholarships last summer, and it was a life-changing experience! She has since used her Arabic in regular teleconferencing with the Rachel Corrie Children and Youth Cultural Center, in Rafa, Gaza, Palestine. (she began without any Arabic whatsoever).

The application is a lot of work, and the program is extremely selective, but I can't imagine a better 7-week educational experience.

Yes, the state department held up the notifications for a few days. My daughter received one of the scholarships for this summer. There were apparently about 130 students vying for 30 spots. The application was lengthy and arduous, especially as my daughter is in France with SYA, and everything seemed to need to be done in the most difficult way possible! But she's in and very excited; anyone else who's going should pm me!

The program depends on federal grants through the StarTalk program (Strategic Language Initiatives). The organization (AFS in this case) applies in January/February and finds out if the grant has been allocated in March. Therefore, AFS doesn't even post anything about the scholarship until about March.

Look at the info from the year before and be prepared to quickly fill out the scholarship application if you are interested. Unless something changes drastically, the grant will be approved. AFS has been doing a wonderful job and has gotten more money every year -- 12 kids sent the first year, 24 the second year and 30 this past summer. I have no idea how many they will send next summer.

The program has been expanded and now includes other languages like Mandarin, Russian, and Turkish as well as Arabic. The deadline to apply for the scholarship for summer 2009 departure is Feb 2. See Scholarships | AFS USA -- there are other scholarships listed here, too.
